Tuesday 27th April, Rochdale. Promotion was clinched, but only 296 U's fans could be there ... or could they?
As some of you know, U's Net offers updates throughout most matches, which begin when Mark Johnson rings me from the ground with the team sheets. In addition Mark usually supplies goal flashes, half- and full-time updates and a 'man of the match'. As Radio Cambridgeshire doesn't reach the Isle of Man, my husband Pheric was in charge of the TV remote on this night, checking text for the other important game between Halifax and Scunthorpe. During the second half, as he 'phoned through an update of sorts, Mark made special mention of the non-stop singing from the travelling U's and I was able to pass on the news that Halifax were leading Scunthorpe 1-0. We knew that if Halifax held on for the win then a victory for us would ensure promotion. The excitement started in the 82nd minute when the phone rang again. I answered on the second ring to hear Mark shouting "Answer!" and as soon as I spoke he barked, "Penalty, John Taylor stepping up ...…HE'S SCORED!!" After jumping up and down to celebrate the goal I had to ask Pheric to check the Halifax score, and then came the surreal news that Mark was signalling the latest score to Ken Steggles on the Cambridge bench - all the way from a TV in the Isle of Man! It got better as the night wore on. While I was updating the news page and trying to catch up with the action, Mark rang again to share the last few minutes. He may be an employee of the club these days, and a reporter for Clubcall and local radio, but he's every bit a passionate U's fan and we both shared the uncertainty as Rochdale looked for a goal and we waited for "FT" to appear after the Halifax score. I had logged onto the Sporting Life web site at http://www.sporting-life.com and had their vidiprinter window running on my computer in case it was slightly faster than Teletext or Ceefax, all the time listening to Mark's running commentary. We have accidentally shared a few goals this season when United have scored whilst Mark was delivering an update, but none were so special as when he described John Taylor's 89th minute goal from Rochdale. I leapt up again - no words necessary for Pheric! - and the pair of us blathered away for a moment while I struggled to type Taylor 89' into the news page and update the site, and Mark described the scenes at Rochdale. Again updates from Teletext were demanded and duly delivered, and we couldn't bear to put the phone down during the dying seconds. All the time this was going on, a small gathering was taking place in the Abbey Arms chat room elsewhere on the site, as United fans throughout the globe realised what was happening and wanted to 'share' the moment with others. Just as the final whistle went at Rochdale the Sporting Life vidiprinter confirmed that the Halifax game had ended 1-0 and the celebrations could begin in earnest. Mark described the scenes as jubilant fans took to the pitch, and I struggled to type the details into the PC as we tried to find the words to sum up the goals, the game, the season and particularly the fairytale contribution of that man John Taylor. We concluded that if you wrote down the story of his season it would be laughed off as too unlikely! I visited the message board in the vain hope that I would be the first to leave a "Promoted!" message. No chance! Rory from Germany got there first, soon after the first goal I think, with his message entitled "The first to say ..." Messages were arriving literally by the second, so that when you returned to the index after reading one message, there were two or three new ones every time! There were hundreds of messages by the end of the week and although most were from Cambridge United supporters, congratulations were received from fans of many clubs including Derby, Norwich, Cardiff, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Swansea, Leyton Orient, Brentford, Mansfield, Halifax and Fulham. Notably there were a large number of genuine messages from Peterborough fans, many of them regulars on the board for the last few seasons. Among the individuals who left messages were former players Colin Vowden and Neil Mackenzie - who thoroughly enjoyed his loan spell with us and hopes to return - former secretary Steve Greenall, and Gerald Main from Radio Cambridgeshire who was drumming up callers for his breakfast show. But whilst the first messages were being left on the board, there was a record attendance in the Abbey Arms too. Germany, Norway, Australia and the USA were represented as United supporters from near and far logged on to celebrate with like-minded people. Then it was time for me to get to 'work' again when the redoubtable James Mitchell logged on to tell me that the goals had been shown on Sky TV at 10.30pm and he had already made video clips for the website. I uploaded them to U's Net and the demand for them was amazing. So, despite the fact that less than 300 could make the long mid-week trip to Rochdale to see the moment that we were promoted, it was an incredible night in 'cyber space' for U's fans both near and far from the Abbey. I would like to heartily thank Mark Johnson for his excellent match updates this season, which have helped many long-distance supporters feel part of the action, and the co-operation I have received from him, Andy Pincher, Graham Eales, Gary Harwood and - originally - Steve Greenall as U's Net has gone from strength to strength this season. I must also thank Will Jones, Terry Wilby and Keith Webb for their regular and detailed match reports, James Mitchell for the video clips, and everyone else who has contributed in some way to the web site. It has become a group effort in many ways and I believe the club's involvement makes it unique among 'unofficial' sites. Finally, I must of course thank Roy McFarland, his staff and the players for giving us such an enjoyable season. There will be plenty happening on U's Net during the summer, including another question and answer session with Roy McFarland. Also look out for a massive quiz compiled by Simon Gleave and Nick Pomery, and the regular captions competition. The site itself will undergo the usual summer facelift and additions so this is the time to make suggestions or requests. Have a great summer and see you in Division Two! Andrea Thrussell |
