Today's game is the first of the two remaining home games this season, and both are set to be 'big' games in front of a packed Abbey Stadium. Our visitors today are of course local rivals Peterborough United and the message boards on U's Net and the posh.net web site have featured banter and predictions from both sets of fans.
Thankfully at the time of writing there have been none of the over-confident promises from U's fans that came back to haunt us after last November's result at London Road. To have been at that game must have been bad, but I can tell you it was no fun either to visit the U's Net message board less than an hour after the final whistle, to be faced by dozens of fresh and gleeful messages from Posh fans as they returned the U's taunts, with interest! The guestbook has received some varied messages recently, from all over the globe and a range of personalities. Joe from Thailand signed in to say that he visits the site weekly to keep up to date with our progress, and to wish us good luck for the rest of the season. A teacher in Blackpool wrote that he was spreading the word of the U's in his school and his students now checked our results straight after looking for Manchester United's. One visitor from Canada wrote that he has supported United since we were known as Abbey United and played on Parker's Piece, and was delighted to have found the web site so he could keep in touch with our results and news now that he lives abroad. There are a lot of entries in the guestbook from exiles who have moved away from Cambridge to live overseas, and there are always plenty from Australia. One young fan from Oz asked recently how he could obtain a replica shirt and was delighted to learn that the new club shop web site (at http://www.cambridge-united.co.uk) had gone on line that week. However the most unusual entry in recent weeks was from a female Halifax fan. She wrote that she wished her Cambridge United-supporting boyfriend would spend less time on U's Net, fantasising about his team, and would e-mail her instead! I wrote last time about the opportunity to send a question to John Taylor via U's Net and I have received many replies. John has said he will answer them in the very near future and the "JT Q&A" should make a fascinating addition to the site. Another planned addition is a section dedicated to the redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium, which will start by offering the archived news to date on that subject. Elsewhere in today's programme, director Gary Harwood answers questions from fans about the planned redevelopment, and in conjunction with CUSA and the club you will soon be able to see the plans and get regular updates on U's Net. I hope to have some more details on that in the Brentford programme. In recent months I have also been working with the CUSA to offer away travel details on the site, and minutes of their recent meetings can be found under "The Fans" link on the main page. If you think there is some information that would be of interest to other fans which is not currently available on U's Net, please send me an email as soon as possible. The close season is when I tend to do any major reorganisation on the site so any suggestions for additions or improvements would be welcome right now, and there is a feedback form on the site for exactly that purpose. All that remains now is to wish success for our team this afternoon in the quest for three more points - come on you U's! Andrea Thrussell |
