In the 'Net

Last weeks game against Cardiff City was a very memorable occasion for many people, as after months and in some cases years of exchanging views and comments in cyberspace, 47 Cambridge United fans met up in the Harris Suite before and after the game. For many people it was the first time they had met 'face to face' even though both personality and friendship had already been established over the 'Net. Andrea has explained over the last few weeks how members from the 'Moosenet' e-mailing list sponsored the Cardiff game, so I will go into some detail as to how the afternoon went.

Modern technology and indeed the Internet is frowned upon by a some sections of society, which appear to view it as a negative and almost character assassinating medium of exchange. Those who hold these views should have been there on Saturday to witness the various friendships the Internet has established and maintained amongst many Cambridge United supporters.

It was an excellent day, and thanks must go to Jamie Dyer and his wife for organising and making the day run so smoothly. We had planned to present Martin Butler with his player of the month certificate for March, but I think the chants of 'Martin, Martin Butler' from 50 or so fans scared him into a quick exit! The 'Moosenet' sponsored Michael Kyd accepted the award on Martin's behalf, and veteran John Taylor found the time to pose for some photographs as well.

A huge area of debate last week was the decision by Chelsea Football Club to stand by Graham Rix despite him being imprisoned for a year following his relationship with a young girl. My Terrace Talk article this week gives you an insight as to the level of debate present on Moosenet as I glean some quotes from some of the members of this thriving list.

U's Net continues to grow in popularity and attendance as the season goes on, and is steadily approaching its 200,000th visitor. Andrea spends a lot of her time and money maintaining the site and we are very lucky to have such a dedicated and committed person as she produces not just one of, but probably the best site in the league.

When speaking to people at the matches, it is apparent that some people don't understand the difference between 'Moosenet' and 'U's Net' so I thought I would take this opportunity to clarify the difference. 'Moosenet' is an e-mailing list, to which people subscribe then exchange views on various things to do with Cambridge United. U's Net on the other hand is a World Wide Web site, on which you will find many different things from news and information to chat and programme notes.

On a final note I would like to say once again how much I enjoyed the chance to put so many faces to so many names last weekend, and the rather surreal experience of hearing the Main Stand sing! In fact, the thing I enjoyed most during the afternoon was when we all sang "Roy McFarland's Amber Army" and Roy acknowledged the chant and gave us the thumbs up. I am not sure if he knows exactly how much the fans of this club appreciate what a superb job he has done and is doing. Once again, on behalf of all the members of 'Moosenet':…"Roy McFarland's Amber Army!"
