A lot of Cambridge United supporters will have travelled from far and wide for this afternoon's "top of the table" game. Some will be regulars and others will have made a special effort for the big game, but one concentration of long distance travellers will meet for the first time after a unique arrangement.
Many members of the Moosenet e-mailing list have sponsored a Cambridge United player for the last four seasons, firstly Danny Granville and now Michael Kyd, each paying ten pounds to be part of the sponsorship. This season, in view of the growing membership of the list, we have also arranged to be 'hidden' sponsors of today's match and, as well as handing over a sizeable sum to the club, it is the opportunity for many list members to meet face-to-face for the first time. Just under 50 Moosenet members will be meeting up before the game, and sitting together in the Main Stand to watch the action. Some live just a few minutes from the ground, some are travelling from far corners of the country, but we will also be joined by Paul from the west coast of the USA, Rory from Germany, Ed from Italy, Mattie from Norway, and someone from the Isle of Man. Planning began early this season when it became clear that we would have more than enough money to do the usual sponsorship of one player. After discussing matchball sponsorship and talking with the club, we decided to increase our individual contributions a little and opted for match sponsorship. The difficult task was to pick a game that everyone could attend. Almost all the games were still available at that point so we swapped notes on the ones we could make and those that we couldn't, and today's game was the one that most of us could attend. Of those who were interested, only one person had a family holiday that couldn't be rearranged, so no doubt we will raise a glass to Terry in Florida before the game! The decision was also taken to be 'hidden' sponsors of the game, which would allow the club to seek another headline sponsor for an increasingly important game. I believe Q103 have the honour today and will be broadcasting regular updates from the Abbey. As I have written before, Moosenet subscribers comprise a broad cross-section of U's fans. Our group today will include a number of singers who are 'on loan' from the North Terrace, so don't be too surprised to hear a rendition of "We're The Main Stand Over Here!" or "Roy McFarland's Amber Army" from the Executive Box this afternoon. It should be a memorable afternoon for a number of reasons, and our thanks go to Dominic for the original idea and to Jamie for organising things while fitting in his own wedding as well! Hopefully today's game will live up to the months of planning. Come on you U's! Andrea Thrussell |
