In the 'Net

The web site has been 'decorated' for Christmas with a few small images here and there on the busiest areas, and at the time of writing (the day of the Brentford game) I am wondering whether to add a seasonal tune to some of the pages. Sounds - in the form of midi or wave files - can be added to web pages and play automatically when the page is loaded or alternatively when the reader clicks on a button.

U's Net has a selection of sound files throughout the site, ranging from a "United, United" chant on some of the sub-menu pages, to Steve Greenall's radio commentary on Dion's goal at Wembley, to the recent addition of a 20 second snatch of "Coconuts". The Coconuts file is embedded into winning match report pages and has proved to be very popular, but I can only include a small section of the song as wave files tend to grow very large. To download the whole song the average reader would have to wait about ten minutes before hearing it!

The site also has a midi file of "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" which plays as you read the jokes page dedicated to our county cousins, and a wave file with a slightly rude message to our local rivals.

The message board continues to attract new visitors as well as the regulars and a smattering of rival fans. Most tend to make reasonable comments and, as has been said before, general banter about the fortunes of our respective clubs is always welcome. One recent message was from an Oxford supporter drawing attention to the plight of his club, while the situation at Chester City is already well known.

Fans United was the event at Brighton a couple of years ago when fans of many different clubs turned up to support Brighton in one of their last games at the Goldstone Ground. Fans United 2 was at the February game between Brighton and Doncaster to draw attention to the Yorkshire club's problems, and next month Fans United 3 takes place at Chester's televised game against Brighton on the 15th. The Internet played a big part in organising all of these events and spreading the word throughout the country and, indeed, the world. It is always good to see that at times like this supporters can set aside their natural rivalries and combine to good effect.

As a postscript to last month's Player of the Month poll, Will Jones suggested that some sort of presentation should be made to the winning player, so we composed a certificate-type sheet of quotes from the fans that Will presented to the winner John Taylor after the Plymouth game. Graham Eales has agreed that we can make this a regular event, and we produced a similar 'certificate' for Shaun Marshall as we felt that the young goalkeeper really ought to see some of the glowing comments made about him when he was voted the winner in October.

The current poll asks U's fans to predict where United will finish in the table at the end of the season, but after Monday's game in Carlisle voting for the Player of the Month will start all over again.

In the meantime it only remains to wish you all a Happy New Year and a successful 1999 for Cambridge United,

Andrea Thrussell
