After the distraction of the recent cup games it is back to the guided tour of U's Net.
The "Links" section is only a single page long but it is one of the most 'high maintenance' parts of the web site. Links to and from other web pages are the life-blood of the Internet, and without them users could spend hours searching for pages. However the addresses often change and web sites sometimes 'die' so they need checking regularly. The links page on U's Net offers comprehensive links to sites for every other Division Three club, as well as sites of local interest such as the Cambridge Evening News site, the Nationwide League page for CUFC and sites that offer categorised links for Cambridge. In addition there are links to sites offering sports news and reports, like the excellent Sporting Life site and the BBC, and specialist sites that categorise links to the web sites of football clubs all over the world. If a web site is to be seen it needs to be entered into as many of these sites as possible, as well as registered in all the major 'search engines' which are your starting point when you search the Internet for information. Sometimes this is an instant process, but in the case of the giant "Yahoo" database it took months to get a listing! Then there are more general links like the web page for the fanzine "When Saturday Comes", the PFA and FSA web sites, a message board specifically for Division Three, and one that provides links to the various message boards for individual clubs. Back to the front page of the site, and the 'interactive part' where the supporters drive the content. There is usually an opinion poll in process on U's Net, whether that is the regular Player of the Month poll or a topical vote on something relevant to Cambridge United or football in general. In tonight's programme you are asked to vote for Cambridge United's "Local Hero" from a short list of 20 nominees, and U's Net was asked by Graham Eales to hold a poll to help with gathering names for this list, along with the CEN and other local media. I hope to offer the chance to vote on the final 20 for those fans who do not have access to tonight's programme. There have been two Player of the Month polls since the start of the season. Goals have obviously carried a lot of weight as in August the runaway winner was Martin Butler, with Alex Russell the runner-up. In September the winner was unsurprisingly Trevor Benjamin, although Alex Russell and Neil Mustoe both attracted several votes for their contributions. The other polls so far this season were about Roy McFarland's thoughts on a penalty shoot-out for a drawn game, and favourite past strips. The penalty shoot-out idea, mentioned in the Scarborough programme, received a resounding NO from two thirds of the voters. Many commented that it was too "American" an idea, although they conceded that it might improve the chances of the England team winning a penalty shoot-out! Of previous Cambridge United strips, the favourite was last season's black and amber quartered home kit and the least favourite was the light blue "pyjama" away strip of the early 90s.
