Today's visitors are Leyton Orient and supporters of both clubs have been exchanging frank, and sometimes heated, views on the U's Net message board about the protracted on-off transfer of 'Billy' Beall.
While most comments and replies on the message board are topical and usually fairly short-lived, this particular debate has been on-going since the early summer. Secretary Steve Greenall got involved quite early, using the board to correct some misconceptions and explain certain points. Since then director Gary Harwood has also stepped in to add his weight to United's argument. The 'open' attitude at our club was demonstrated late last week when one Orient fan, who has had a lot to say on the subject, was invited to call into the club office and meet both Steve Greenall and Gary Harwood before today's game. I don't know if he took them up on the offer but I hope he did. In the meantime, the discussion looks set to continue! Continuing the look around the U's Net web site, this week I am moving along to "The Fans" section, this is a large part of the site and the one that attracts the most input from visitors. The first thing you will find here is details of the Moosenet mailing list, sponsors of Michael Kyd for two seasons and Danny Granville before him. Moosenet comprises over 100 fans from around the world who swap news, stories, match reports, banter and the odd joke on a daily basis and I recommend any 'on-line' United fans to join. You don't have to contribute, if you prefer you can just 'lurk' and read the messages and reports, but lifts and pre-match meetings have been arranged through the list and some members have finally been able to put names to people they have seen on the terraces for years! I would like to add my personal thanks to those 'Moosenetters' who write the excellent match reports that can be read on U's Net. They are honest, accurate and in most cases far superior to anything you will read in the national Press. Also within this part of the site are the opinion polls that, time permitting, are run every couple of weeks. They are usually topical and have covered heavyweight subjects such as nursery or 'feeder' clubs, a poll for the CUSA about holding matches on Friday nights, through to predictions about where United will finish in the table and the regular voting for the player of the month. Archives of all the polls are kept on the site and can make interesting reading in retrospect! Currently you can vote on Roy McFarland's proposal in last week's programme that games which are level after 90 minutes could be subject to a penalty shoot-out, earning an additional point for the winners. Other features in this part of the site include excellent Fans Forum reports by Jamie Dyer, a growing 'directory' of United fans on the Internet, details of the Abbey Rabbit and the Cambridge United Southern Supporters, and a guide to recommended pubs near third division grounds. The pub guide was compiled for U's Net by United fan Peter Laborne who has since set up his own web site (www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~plaborne/) on the subject and expanded it to include all English Premiership and League clubs. It is well worth a look and he would be grateful for recommendations from experienced 'researchers'! More soon, Andrea Thrussell |
