Continuing the look around the U's Net web site, the next section is called "The Club".
It includes details about Cambridge United ranging from the address, telephone numbers and officials of the club, to the club records and other facts and figures. In this part of the site you can read a career profile of manager Roy McFarland and also an extended version of the article about chairman Reg Smart that appeared in last season's final programme. Dave Brown told me that he had to leave a lot out of the original 'Behind the Scenes' article due to space constraints, so I invited him to write an extended version for U's Net and he was happy to oblige. Visiting fans can look up directions to the ground and a plan of The Abbey, while the Abbey Rabbit fanzine gave permission for their "Alternative Guide to Cambridge United" to be reproduced in this section. The light-hearted article by Steve Jillings gives tips to visiting fans about parking, pubs and eateries both in Cambridge and nearer to the ground. This section also includes the current matchday ticket prices along with pictures of the new home and away strips. Many fans caught their first glimpse of the new home strip on U's Net earlier this summer, thanks to pictures supplied by Graham Eales. The final feature in The Club section is a 'virtual tour' of the Abbey Stadium. It consists of photographs and descriptions of various stands and parts of the ground, taken by fans and reproduced by permission, plus some 'behind the scenes' pictures from Graham. These allow interested supporters to get perhaps their first look at the dressing room, weights room and kit room. A very recent addition to the site is the "Download Zone". This currently includes three spreadsheets supplied by fans (an all-time league table, a record of matches attended over several years, and a DIY record of this season) but in the near future it will include a selection of free goodies to download and use on your computer. I am working on a selection of background tiles and 'wallpapers' to personalise your desktop and a screensaver or two should follow shortly. If you have anything United-related that you think might be suitable for sharing with other United supporters in this part of the site, please e-mail me (andreat@enterprise.net) and I will tell you how and where to send it. As you might guess from its name, the "Look Back In Amber" section looks back at United's past. In addition to a club history by Simon "Shaggy" Gleave there are U's Net archives from the last three seasons, and a collection of tales and pictures of the play-off final at Wembley - including the 'behind the scenes' build-up to the game as seen by then-radio and Clubcall reporter Steve Greenall. Finally there are profiles of several former United players who have played in the Premiership in the last few seasons, and this part of the site is due for expansion. More soon, Andrea Thrussell |
