Andrea Thrussell - Watford, Tuesday 11th August 1998

Last season Andrea Thrussell, a United fan exiled in the Isle of Man, was the subject of a profile by Dave Brown. Secretary Steve Greenall knew of Andrea having met her and her husband, Pheric, a couple of times. Since getting a home computer, Steve has come to realise the extent of the interest in the club via the Internet and "Moosenet", which is a group of over 100 United fans around the world who keep in regular correspondence.

The use of the Internet is growing at a phenomenal rate, as can be illustrated by the number of visits, or "hits", onto the U's Net, the name of the site which Andrea started up just over two years ago. A couple of weeks before Christmas there had been 20,000 hits onto U's Net, the 20,000th visitor being a guy based at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. By April, 30,000 visitors had checked out the site, but it took just three months for the 40,000 to be realised. That was on July 8th, but since then an astonishing 7,000 hits have been made in just over one month.

To reflect this growing interest, we have "invited" Andrea to write a regular column in the programme. U's Net can be found at www.cambridgeunited.com

Andrea did say that the first article would be an introduction to what you can find on U's Net, but she had two different e-mails in the last week which sum up the ever-increasing appeal of the site.

The first was from the BBC telling her that U's Net had been included in the Web Guide section of their site at www.bbc.co.uk. Apart from the honour of being selected as one of very few lower division sites among the official Premiership sites and the likes of the Daily Mail's massive "Soccernet" site, their review included such phrases as "exemplifies the best in unofficial sites" and "Wonderfully entertaining". They also enjoyed the page of P*sh jokes!

The other e-mail, and one which meant even more, was from keen United fan James who is backpacking in Australia, ten months into a world tour. He has been logging onto U's Net since arriving in Bangkok and everywhere since, keeping in touch with United news. He wrote, "I guess my travels would not have been so extensive had I not had access to The Abbey".
