Welcome to everyone at the Abbey Stadium today, including the players, staff and management of Brentford, who like us, have already guaranteed promotion and are now aiming to win the Division Three title in the final game of the campaign.
It is a great way to end the season. It would have made life a little easier if Brentford hadn't beaten Swansea but I have got no complaints playing for the title in front of a full house at our own ground. It is a case of winner takes all and both sets of players know what they have got to do. The champions have played at the Abbey in the last game of each of the last two seasons. It is happening again today and it is up to the players to make sure that it is us this time around. We have said all along that if we win any silverware it will he a bonus and that promotion was the main aim, but Brentford will be as determined as us to win the ultimate prize. It is a marvellous way to end the season. I expected a lot of the players this season and they haven't let me down. It was a superb night at Rochdale when we clinched promotion, but then the players came down to earth with a bruising encounter at Plymouth. But they have performed admirably this season and it was great for the 300 fans who made their way to Rochdale and saw us make sure of promotion. It is a night they won't forget and neither will the players. It was special. I am particularly pleased for John Taylor who came off the bench and took the penalty not long afterwards. You would expect him to shoulder that responsibility and Martin Butler also showed a lot of courage by letting John take it. A lot of players would have been thinking of their reputations and so on, so it was a credit to both players. It was a tremendous effort by the team as well on a difficult surface. Finally, but by no means least, a special thanks to the fans who have watched us this season. The increase in support is, in a sense, appreciated by the football club for financial reasons but even more so by the players. Playing in a better atmosphere as we will have against Brentford today is great for the players and it is the atmosphere I am hoping for in the future. I hope to see you all in the Second Division next season. ROY McFARLAND |
