Well, what an emotional night it was for all of us at Nottingham Forest. I can honestly say that it was the best night since I have been here. I was so proud to be their manager in terms of the courage and hard work that the players showed to come back from 3-0 down away to a Premier League team.
It was a great achievement by them to bring it level at 3-3 and it was probably matched by our supporters - all 3,500 plus of them. I think the fact that we were attacking towards that end in the second half certainly gave everyone something to cheer about. Your help was certainly noted by all of the players. You created a fantastic atmosphere and it was almost like we were playing at home. Even when we were 3-0 down you were still with us because there was a sense that we were still in the game. We lost on penalties, which is also a devastating way to lose a game, but at least we can look back and say that they didn't beat us over 90, or even 120 minutes. I firmly believe that the experience will have done our players a lot of good and made them stronger and more determined to to succeed. When they missed their first penalty I honestly thought that the game might turn in our favour. It didn't work out like that, but to have gone out the way we did means we can all walk away with our heads held high. After that game I had to make sure that the training was right because we had a lot of very tired players. It was the physical side that we needed to look at because I think mentally they were still on such a high when it came to the Mansfield game. That match was really an end-to-end encounter. There was a feeling of excitement and we really deserved to to have won 3-1 with all the chances that we created. The win also kept going our impressive fact of having the best away record in the Football League. Now we come back to The Abbey and we really need to get a result against Barnet today. Maybe we need to take a look at how we play at home. I've looked at all the videos and I think we are just not producing that final pass, cross or set piece that we are when we go away. Maybe it's that we get more space away from home because teams are coming here and sitting deeper which always make it harder to break through. But we have also failed to produce our quality play in the 18-yard box. It is a bit ironic that it is Barnet visiting The Abbey today because it has been well documented that I have expressed interest in bringing striker Scott McGleish back here. Ever since he left here I have been following his career and I will continue to do so, despite having our bid turned down by Barnet. I think he would be an asset to the club. I like his qualities and and it isn't a case that he has something that our current crop of strikers don't have. It will create better competition for places and the more goalscorers you have the more goals you will score. On the injury front I expect Arjan Van Heusden to be back training with us next week, while Marc Joseph and Neil Mustoe should be back in contention in a week to ten days. That thigh injury to Marc has given Martin McNeil his opportunity and overall I must say that he has done fantastically well. He did well against Shrewsbury and that gave me the confidence to give him his chance, which he has grabbed with both hands. He has certainly enjoyed the experience and he looks like being a fixture in our squad for the rest of the season. Finally I would like to extend a warm welcome to John Still and everyone connected with Barnet Football Club. I hope you enjoy the game. ROY McFARLAND |
