From the Manager

Roy McFarland - Sheffield Wednesday, Tuesday 22nd September 1998

Roy McFarland Welcome to The Abbey for tonight's mouthwatering return leg of the Worthington Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday. There is no doubting that winning 1-0 at Hillsborough was an excellent result, especially as our main aim was simply to try and keep the tie bubbling for the second leg here.

Not only did we achieve that but we are in a position where we are actually in front, thanks to Trevor Benjamin's early strike. However I don't think that will make tonight's game any easier because Wednesday's pride will have been hurt by the defeat. We know the type of players they have and we certainly have to respect them, but the pleasing thing for me is the positive manner in which we approached the game at Hillsborough.

We got the goal early on and managed to hold on to it. I would like us to do the same here. Hopefully The Abbey will be full and, as much as anything else, we don't want to let our supporters down. We have had a packed house before and we have let them down, so hopefully we will perform and give you all something to cheer about.

If we approach it as we did the first leg and don't sit back, I believe we will do well. I almost feel that whenever we play we will score and it is pleasing that we have kept clean sheets in our last three games. We don't want to sit back and defend, but if we keep a clean sheet then obviously we go through.

It wasn't a case of backs to the wall after Trevor's goal, but with their quality of players we obviously had to defend. Our defending was commendable and we cleared balls off the line and got bodies in the way. I also think that Lady Luck was with us a little bit. I am hoping it will be on side again tonight.

I have been pleased with our clean sheets because in the two games before we had conceded six goals. That is something that the players and I have worked on and we hope that we have got to the bottom of it. One thing I have noticed is an improvement in the understanding between our goalkeeper and and the back four - something that was always going to take time.

Another plus is that we are now scoring goals from sources other than Martin Butler. Jamie Campbell scored against Leyton Orient and Trevor Benjamin has found the net at Sheffield Wednesday and Southend. We can't rely on just one striker getting the goals though. Martin will get his fair share, but it's great to see others chipping in as well.

On the injury front Michael Kyd has now had an operation on his knee, which will keep him sidelined for about five weeks. That is about the length of time we'll be without Ian Ashbee as he recovers from a severely twisted ankle.

Finally, I would like to wish Danny Wilson all the best with his job as I have known him for a long time. He did a tremendous job at Barnsley and I feel that, given time, he will sort Wednesday out.

I hope you all enjoy the game and that we give you something to cheer about.

ROY McFARLAND
