From the Manager

Roy McFarland - Leyton Orient, Saturday 12th September 1998

rule

Roy McFarland Our last two games, which have both brought second half defeats, has brought to light the fact that we have as much of a psychological barrier to overcome at the Club as well as a physical one.

On Tuesday, at Scunthorpe, it was disappointing to end the game the way we did after starting so well. And what can I say about Scarborough on Saturday?

Lately, we have been playing some good football, we've been creating goal scoring opportunities and we are making the most of those chances. But when it comes to defending set pieces we seem to be failing.

By conceding four goals we are obviously letting ourselves down and, especially if that comes from set pieces, it makes the job very hard.

On a positive note, however, in general play we seem to be doing well and we have conceded just two goals.

At Scarborough we were disappointed to have been 2-0 up and then lose our advantage. We played good football and it was undoubtedly one of the best games we have played all season.

At half time we were two goals up and, if we had kept this up, we would have found the game easier. But we took our foot off the pedal and from looking at the video of the game I can see that they didn't have a shot on target, except from set pieces. I don't want us to get paranoid about this problem, but it is a situation that has to be addressed.

I would like to think that we can put this right when we play Leyton Orient today. The games over the past two seasons at Leyton Orient have always had some sort of edge to them, so possibly in that sense it is good for us to be playing them.

In terms of the League it is also good that teams seem to be beating each other which means that although we have lost a little bit of ground lately, it is not ground that we cannot make up.

But like I said, if we are to catch up, we need to be a little bit more mentally strong as well as physically.

Martin Butler will be particularly important in the game against Leyton Orient today. He has had a great start to the season and has done well for us. I am really pleased for him, but we all have to work as a team to get over this psychological barrier.

We've had one or two setbacks that have made things particularly difficult for us. Michael Kyd has had a cartilage operation on his knee, so he will be out for four to six weeks. There is also Ian Ashbee, who twisted an ankle quite badly in training the day before we were going to Scunthorpe and we don't really know how long he will take to recover. Hopefully he will be in contention for the cup game against Sheffield Wednesday.
