Roy McFarland - Scarborough, Saturday 5th September 1998

rule

Roy McFarland It was pleasing to get back to winning ways at Chester on Tuesday night after our unbeaten home record was brought to an end by a late goal from Hartlepool three days before.

I had been disappointed by the way that we lost that match and not just because it was an injury-time winner. I felt that it was a case of a lack of concentration on our part to give away the free-kick from which they scored. After that defeat I made a few changes to the side to face Chester. I left Trevor Benjamin out of the side and brought in David Preece and Tom Youngs because I felt that we needed to play more football and control the game better.

I was really pleased with how Tom played in only his second League game. He was under a lot of pressure, like the rest of the players were, but he came through it well for us.

The other change that I made was forced upon me because of an injury to Michael Kyd. It looks like he is going to need a cartilage operation after seeing a specialist. That is a sad blow for him. He had a similar injury at this sort of time last year and it really knocked his season for six.

Hopefully Michael will be a little bit wiser after that experience and will regain his sharpness better than before. Maybe he needs to come back more focussed and understand what is required to get back to his best form again. We will have to wait and see how long Michael is going to be out. Hopefully it will only be short-term, but if not then we may have to look in the transfer market or see whether we can solve the problem from within the club.

Another striker that I hope will be back to his best today is Martin Butler. We took a bit of a gamble playing him against Hartlepool because he had not quite recovered from his bout of food poisoning. He looked lacklustre and had not regained his sharpness, but there was some flashes against Chester that seemed to show he is almost back to his old self. Hopefully he'll be in top shape against Scarborough because we really need to bounce back.

We have gone away to Chester and played well, but once again it has not been done in front of our own supporters. I always feel, and have done for a long time, that it is important to play well here at The Abbey and hopefully we can do that against Scarborough today.

Scarborough, as we can see from the table, are only one place off the bottom of Division Three but that does not mean that we can be complacent and think that the three points are automatically ours. The reports that I have had are that Scarborough have been playing well but have been unlucky not to get the points.

Finally, I would like to bounce an idea past you, the fans. I may write to the Football League to suggest that each game has to have a result, although I don't mean by playing extra-time. If, after 90 minutes, there is a result then that should stand in the normal way. But, if the two sides are drawing at full-time, I wonder what would happen if the team played for an extra point in a penalty shoot-out.

Would this make it more attractive to the supporter if they were guaranteed a winner - i.e. collecting maybe two points if you win the shoot-out and one for the loser as in a normal draw. I have thought about this idea a lot and would really be interested to hear the views of the fans.

I hope you enjoy the game this afternoon.
