Thursday 4th November 1999 : Roy: "Wanny is struggling"

Roy McFarland has admitted that U's skipper Paul Wanless is one of the players finding life hard in the second division.

In today's exclusive 'On The Spot' interview he said, "I think there are a number of players who are finding the going a little bit tough, and Paul is one of them. He has struggled to hit form and to get onto the end of chances to score goals.

"I have tried to change his role and play him a bit deeper, but that hasn't really worked for him. When I play Paul Wanless he gives me everything he has got. Maybe at times that hasn't been good enough, but his intentions are spot on."

McFarland also discussed recent performances and confirmed that strengthening the team, and especially the defence, remains a priority, as does a win at Bristol City this weekend:

"Maybe now is a good time to be playing them," he told Will Jones for U's Net. "I know we are not getting results, but what we are doing at the moment is performing well and producing good football. If we are going to start somewhere, then why not at Ashton Gate?"
