Monday 1st November 1999 : Shaggy: "We have to be strong favourites" ...

Roy McFarland believes his side have been handed a golden opportunity to reach the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in seven years.

United were paired with Bamber Bridge in Saturday's draw, a side from lower down the Unibond League than Gateshead, and McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News, "We can't ask for anything better than this draw.

"We are at home, which is important, to another team from a lower league and it's a marvellous chance for us to go on and get a big club. And it's another opportunity to give our supporters something after letting them down a bit on Saturday."

Goalscorer John Taylor agreed with his manager, saying, "No disrespect to Bamber Bridge, but it wasn't the kind of draw they wanted, and we have to be very strong favourites to go through. It's a great draw for us."

However Bamber Bridge manager Tony Greenwood would disagree with Taylor. In today's Lancashire Evening Post he comments, "When we were drawn at a non-league team last time we were a bit deflated to be honest but now we've got what we wanted, a match against Football League opposition.

"We've got nothing to lose now, however, we’re just 90 minutes of hard work away from a possible match against an Arsenal, Chelsea or Villa."
