Tuesday 23rd May 2000 : "Trevor will only leave when it's right" - Harwood

Director Gary Harwood has confirmed that Trevor Benjamin will only leave Cambridge United if and when the conditions are right for him and the club.

Trevor Benjamin - photo by Andrea ThrussellThe striker's 23 goals last season made a major contribution to keeping the U's in Division Two, and he is currently training with the England Under-21 party before they depart for Slovakia for the Under-21 European Championships. There has already been plenty of speculation linking him with other clubs including Leicester City and Manchester City, and as recently as Friday Bristol City boss Tony Gawthrop confirmed his interest in the 21-year-old.

On the U's Net message board today, Mr Harwood stated, "We have had two seven figure offers since the end of the season but we have turned them both down. Both Reg (Smart) and I have stated in the past that Trevor will only leave when it's right for both him and the Club and when we get the right transfer fee."

Replying to a question asking if videos had been sent to other clubs, as John Beck did when trying to attract interest in Dion Dublin, he added, "We have not sent videos to other clubs as we are not actively trying to sell him. Naturally, however, we will listen seriously to any sensible offers but they will have to be a fair bit higher than the two so far received."

Have your say on the message board.
