Friday 12th May 2000 : Internet U's in Charlton BHF tournament

The Football League season may be over but the amber and black shirts of Cambridge United will be in action for much of the summer, worn proudly by the members of Moosenet FC. The team is made up by members of the Moosenet e-mailing list and next Saturday they take part in the Charlton BHF Tournament at Coldharbour Leisure Centre in South London (New Eltham SE9).

On Monday 8th February 2000, 18 year old Charlton Internet FC player Jas Deol died of a heart attack, a few hours after playing in a game for CIFC at Coldharbour Leisure Centre. This tragic event inspired his fellow fans to create something that will act as a fitting tribute to Jas and the idea to stage a tournament with the sole intention of raising money for the British Heart Foundation was developed. Consequently sixteen teams from all corners of the UK have paid the entry fee to take part in the tournament, which takes place on FA Cup final day.

Moosenet FC are grouped with teams from Charlton, Man City and Crystal Palace and their first match kicks off at 10.30am. I am sure they would appreciate support from any local U's, and full details of the tournament and schedule can be found at: http://www.btinternet.com/~graemejw/index.htm (this page will open in a new browser window)

The Moosenet FC squad details and history are as follows. All details as supplied by captain Pete Fearn, Peter Laborne and Julie Mansfield who organises training sessions and many of the Moosenet FC matches.

Moosenet FC has been running since April 1999. What started as Peter Laborne's idea in a late-night 'conversation' on the U's Net web page (www.cambridgeunited.com) soon grew into reality. Our first main match was against the Cambridge City internet team, in front of a crowd of almost 1500! This was as a support match to the annual pre-season friendly between United and City.

We have only recently joined the IFA, and our current league record is P4 W2 D0 L2 F8 A12 which looks poor, but our two losses have both been against a strong Arsenal team.

MOOSENET F.C. PLAYER PROFILES.

JON MANSFIELD - FORWARD
Moosenet F.C.'s leading goalscorer, Jon is a tall and pacy striker. Having scored 9 goals in the last 10 games, Jon will be hoping to add a few more to his tally.

NIGEL STONE - FORWARD
Nigel is a pacy and gutsy player who never shies away from a tackle, you can always guarantee a good performance from him.

JOHNNY CURTIS - RIGHT BACK
Johnny is a regular in the Right Back position. He is our most improved player since the team was formed last summer.

PETER LABORNE - RIGHT BACK
Peter is one of our unluckiest players that has been out a lot with injury. He enjoys playing at Right Back but can also fill the Right Midfield slot.

DAVE RADMORE - LEFT BACK
Dave can play in either Full Back position. Living away from Cambridge limits his appearances somewhat.

MARTIN CLARKSON - CENTRE BACK
Martin is a solid player and is one of our regular Centre Back players. At 6ft 3 he is good in the air and uses his build to his advantage.

CHRIS KEYWORTH - CENTRE BACK
Chris is one of our most versatile players. His favourite position is Centre Back but he has also filled in the Midfield and Goalkeeper slots on numerous occasions.

ROB OXLEY - CENTRE BACK
Rob is another of our new players and play virtually anywhere he is put. He is a creative midfielder who isn't afraid to push forward and shoot.

ALEX HARRIS - LEFT MIDFIELD
Alex is one of our new players too. He has fitted in well with the team and always gives 100%. A good passer of the ball who isn't afraid to have a shot.

PETE FEARN - RIGHT MIDFIELD
Pete has recently been handed the Captains armband for his ever present and energetic performances. A modest player who just likes to get on with the job in hand.

NICK JOHNSON - CENTRE MIDFIELD/FORWARD
A pacy midfielder who is a good passer of the ball. Nick is good at getting forward and isn't afraid to have a shot when he gets the chance. Nick can also play up front.

NIGEL HODGSON - CENTRE MIDFIELD
Nigel is a hardworking and tough tackling midfielder. You can rely on him for a good solid performance.

CHRIS CHAMBERS - CENTRE MIDFIELD
Another of our versatile players. Chris can also fill the centre back and striker positions. His height along with Martin's can be very handy for corners.

LUKE BLACK - CENTRE MIDFIELD
Luke is a strong midfield player who can also slot in at centre back if needed. Doubtful for the tournament due to a fractured wrist sustained whilst playing against Preston recently.

TERRY WILBY - GOALKEEPER
An agile goalkeeper who commands his area well. Terry isn't afraid to shout at the defence, or any other player, if things aren't going quite to plan

JOHN FEARN - FORWARD Peter Fearn's younger brother, and one of the CEN's regular Abbey Talk writers, John (or JEF as he is known) is a quick and skilful striker. He's missing the tournament due to A-levels, but he'd kill me if he didn't get a mention.

Good luck to Moosenet FC next weekend.
