Monday 8th May 2000 : Roy's reaction to Wycombe defeat |
|
Cambridge United threatened to take Wycombe Wanderers apart in the opening half hour of Saturday's match and but for goalkeeper Martin Taylor's heroics could have gone in leading three or four-nil at half-time. Unfortunately the heat and enforced changes to the midfield engine meant that the U's sagged after the break and sloppy defending four minutes from time saw the impressive Jermaine McSporran pounce to snatch all three points for the visitors.
"We could have gone in at half time three goals in front, but the Wycombe keeper made some brilliant saves. Then, after the relegation battle, we tired in the heat. We were missing players due to injury and we faded. The most annoying thing was that we gave Wycombe the ball for their late winner. "But I think the fans appreciated the way we dug our way out of trouble this season, when it looked not so long ago that we'd be relegated." McFarland did not reappear with his players who emerged from the dressing room after a curiously long delay to walk a lap of honour and exchange applause with the supporters after the final whistle. By the time both teams emerged the Wycombe fans had given up waiting and were halfway across Coldhams Common, leaving their players to 'warm down' in front of an empty terrace. |
