| Wednesday 29th March 2000 : Midfielders in injury scare |
|
Just as it seemed we were over the worse of the injury crisis, with the long injury list being reduced at last, skipper Paul Wanless and Neil Mackenzie are additional doubts for Saturday's trip to Oldham. Left-back Clive Wilson made his comeback for the reserves this afternoon (next story) and Neil Mustoe is due to return to training this week, but Wanless and fellow midfielder Mackenzie are both under treatment. Mackenzie has a knee injury while Wanless has a thigh injury and is restricted to riding a bicycle as Roy McFarland tries to plan for a game without suspended leading scorer Trevor Benjamin and the injured Tom Youngs.
"Planning for the match won't be easy. We'll have to leave that a day or two until Ken Steggles gives us a rundown on the players' chances. But it could mean a change of formation, something I've had to give some thought to with both Trevor and Tom unavailable." If he sticks with 4-4-2 at Oldham his most likely option is to pair veteran striker John Taylor with last weekend's debutant Nathan Lamey up front, with Zema Abbey ready to come off the bench at some stage. Abbey played and scored for the reserves this afternoon while Lamey did not feature at all - a clear indication that he features prominently in the plans for the weekend. Meanwhile, loan signing Jon Hunt is ready to enter the fray after missing the Oxford game with an ankle injury and he could provide options anywhere in midfield, and with a shortage of experienced strikers and a possible glut of midfielders, McFarland might be toying with the idea of a five man midfield in support of Taylor. As yet another option, John Hansen - who scored a well-taken first goal for United against Oxford at the weekend - has played as a striker in Denmark and might be under consideration in that role with Hunt ready to step in on the left. |
