Thursday 23rd March 2000 : First signing confirmed

Cambridge United have made their first deadline day signing to bring former Watford midfielder Daniel Grieves to the club on non-contract terms. (This update 14.15pm)

The 21-year-old left Watford last summer and spent some time playing in Israel before joining the U's on trial earlier this year. He played his third game for the reserves against Barnet yesterday.

Meanwhile there are strong rumours linking us with a loan deal for Sheffield United's Jonathan Hunt and Newcastle United's Lionel Perez. 28-year-old attacking midfielder Hunt has played for Barnet, Southend and Birmingham City - where he was their 15 goal top-scorer in 1996 - and Derby County, while former Sunderland 'keeper Perez has not figured for Newcastle since his Bosman move in the summer of 1998, but the 32-year-old Frenchman had a good spell on loan at Scunthorpe earlier this season and impressed for them at the Abbey. So far these signings have not been confirmed by Cambridge United and no transfers will be announced until the deals are completed.

Former U's target striker Paul McVeigh has moved from Spurs to Norwich City for a nominal fee.
