| Wednesday 22nd March 2000 : Ken Steggles' treatment room update |
|
He began with the players who were under treatment prior to yesterday's match: Neil Mustoe: "He's been under treatment for a torn hamstring. He's doing well and he's hoping to be back for the game at Oldham on Saturday week. If all goes well he will train this week." Clive Wilson: "Clive had an operative procedure on his left knee. He's doing well and should be OK to train on Thursday or Friday. I'm quite happy with him and if all goes well he could be up for selection this weekend."
"It's not affecting his training though, he's still running, jumping and kicking a ball, but once we get rid of that pain we can take him on further." Alex Russell: "Alex is improving daily and he may - and I must stress that's may - come into contention for the last couple of games of this season. In reality we're looking at next season and we definitely won't be putting him under any pressure to return until he's ready. It was a very delicate injury. "I'm trying to get him to Lilleshall again next week or the week after, which will give him a change of scenery and the chance of some one-on-one time with a therapist instead of the short time every day that I can give him here. He's making very, very good progress." Michael Kyd: "Michael injured his knee in a training match and he's had an operation on his right knee, which is the same knee as last time. He's torn the medial and lateral cartilages. The medial one has been trimmed a little bit but the lateral one had to be sutured together, meaning a prolonged rest, and he's damaged the inside of his joint as well." Asked about the long term prospects for Kyddie, amid rumours that his career as a footballer may be over after this latest knee injury, Ken replied, "He's been in this week and I've changed his dressings and cleaned the wound which was weeping a little as his knee is so swollen and the skin is so stretched. We're waiting for the swelling to go down before we know any more, but it's going to mean a long rest. "All considered he's quite a happy lad, in fact they all are, but don't tell them that!" Moving on to yesterday's casualties, Ken reported: "Shaun Marshall has torn his right thigh muscle. The full extent isn't known at the moment, we'll let it settle for 48 hours but he's definitely out of this weekend's match." Neil Mackenzie: "He got an elbow in the head and he had an 'egg' on the side of his head, but that had diffused this morning. He didn't have concussion, the doctor gave him a full check afterwards and confirmed that. He was feeling poorly last night but I've checked him over this morning and we're quite happy. He won't be training today or tomorrow but hopefully he will train on Friday." Tom Youngs: "He had a problem with his left calf and he's had some treatment this morning. It could be a combination of two problems; he got a direct kick to his calf in the first half which seemed to settle down OK, then in the second half he went through a period of inactivity for about five minutes and then he had to do a long run and he felt a 'popping' sensation in his calf in the same place. That is normally symptomatic of a tear but with him getting a kick in the same area it's hard to tell the difference. We'll give it 24 hours to settle down and then we'll know more. "If it's not a tear then he has a chance of making Saturday's game, but if it's a tear then there's no chance. We'll know more on Friday." Ken also mentioned the much needed help last night from youth team physio Greg Reid, on what was a very busy night. |
