Wednesday 22nd March 2000 : Luton match reactions

As if it wasn't bad enough to watch two points disappear with Luton's goal in the fourth minute of injury time last night, Cambridge United's already stretched squad suffered three more injuries during the match.

Goalkeeper Shaun Marshall, midfielder Neil Mackenzie and forward Tom Youngs all had to be withdrawn from the action and at this stage only Mackenzie looks to have a chance of being available for the match against Oxford on Saturday.

Shaun Marshall - photo by Andrea ThrussellPhysio Ken Steggles told me today that Marshall (right) has torn his thigh muscle and definitely won't play, while Mackenzie had a huge 'egg' on his head last night after being elbowed but that had gone down considerably today and he could return to training by Friday. Tom Youngs came off with a calf injury and they will know more about his chances by Friday. The full interview with Ken follows this story.

Roy McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News, "I think I'll be in danger of getting splinters from my chair, I'll be in it so much on the telephone before the deadline trying to get people in. We already had several players, like Andy Duncan, Alex Russell, Clive Wilson and Michael Kyd, on the injured list in a small squad before this batch.

"I'm sure we would have won the match but for the injuries," he added. "We were leading and on top until we were disrupted in the final quarter of the game. There was another excellent response after a home defeat, and a lot of good performances to encourage us. Plus great support."

In the sports.com report he said, "The injuries to our players knocked us back. We sat back too deep and it looked inevitable that they were going to score. I though after 70 minutes we were comfortable, but we got disrupted. The only real threat was Doherty and he came into the game more and more. I am pleased with a point, we could have possibly sneaked three points, but they deserved a draw because of the way they finished the game."

Opposite number Lennie Lawrence said of their late equaliser, "Paul McLaren doesn't score many goals, but that was an absolutely terrific strike and it earned us a draw." In the CEN he added, "I was massively disappointed by the way my defence was dominated by their front two. We owed a lot to our keeper."
