Tuesday 21st March 2000 : U's in search of first win at Luton - preview

Cambridge United go in search of their first league win at Kenilworth Road tonight and - worryingly for the average cynical U's fan - current form is firmly in United's favour.

Luton have lost six of their last seven matches while we have the second best away record in the division, but historically the records are stacked in Luton's favour. In eleven meetings, we have won only once - the excellent 3-1 win in a Friday night last November - drawn six and lost four.

The match is all-ticket for away fans and with over 1,000 sold there should be plenty of vocal support for the U's as they aim to put Saturday's home defeat by Wrexham firmly behind them and claim three vital points towards the relegation scrap.

John HansenWith Tom Cowan recalled by Burnley, Marc Joseph looks set for a recall at left-back and right-back Jason Kavanagh is fit again and available for selection, giving Roy McFarland options at right-back that he is denied elsewhere by injuries.

In some reports Neil Mackenzie is tipped to replace John Hansen in midfield despite the Dane's good performance against Wrexham. Now that he is reaching match fitness Hansen (right) is putting in increasingly useful performances and provided some useful crosses from the left wing before he was replaced by Mackenzie during the second half on Saturday. Mackenzie supplied the ball for Trevor Benjamin to score United's late third with possibly the lowest-ever diving header.

Up front McFarland's options are limited by Steve Guinan's departure and another knee injury to Michael Kyd, meaning that John Taylor must face his former club and drag his 35-year-old legs through a sixth consecutive game unless Tom Youngs is switched to attack from midfield. Luton lad Zema Abbey is likely to be on the U's bench while his brother Nathan is being kept out of Luton's side by on-loan goalkeeper Ben Roberts of Middlesbrough.

Luton boss Lennie Lawrence has said he intends to rotate his squad to keep them fresh because the Hatters face three games this week. Striker Phil Gray has a groin strain and will probably miss out while Efe Sodje and Stuart Fraser are still sidelined.
