Cambridge United chairman Reg Smart has contacted U's Net to react to the rumours surrounding events at Monday's Sporting Dinner.

Commenting on allegations about the behaviour of a small number of players, he told me, "I was there and what happened is that a few players had a lot to drink, they got a bit over-zealous and their behaviour was unacceptable.

"They have been severely disciplined by the manager and they have accepted their punishment. It has been dealt with internally by the club and that's the end of the matter."

The £40-a-head event in the Harris Suite was attended by many first team players, club directors and management, sponsors and their guests.
