Thursday 16th March 2000 : Supporters to have their say on future kits

Cambridge United fans will be able to have their say on the appearance of future team kits after an agreement was struck between the club and the Cambridge United Supporters Association (CUSA) to allow supporters to be involved in the design process.

Nigel PearceCUSA Secretary Nigel Pearce said, "We are very pleased with this concession from the Club. Replica kit is always a contentious issue between a football club and its fans, and while United fans will not be able to dictate when the team changes a strip, we will be able to influence its design."

He added, "It is only right that this should be the case. The Club want to maximise sales of replica kit and as it's us, the fans, who will be buying it, it is in the Club’s interest to allow us to have a say in what it looks like.

"We haven’t discussed exactly how fans will get involved but it could be, for example, in choosing the colour of the next away shirt, or perhaps voting on the design for a new home shirt from a number of options. The Club have promised to notify the CUSA before the next design process starts when we will agree the fan’s role. That is likely to be around January 2001 - the Club have told us there are no plans to change either the current home or away kit next season.

"Its probably fair to say that United fans have been generally happy with the colour and design of previous kit, but there have been one or two notable exceptions!"
