| Tuesday 14th March 2000 : Club charged after protests at Brentford |
|
Cambridge United have been charged by the Football Association with failing to control their players. The news, announced this afternoon, is the result of a confrontation between United players and the match officials at the end of the Second Division game at Brentford on March 4th. In that match, referee Barry Knight infuriated U's fans, players and management alike by awarding the home side an 87th minute penalty after substitute Lorenzo Pintamonte's shot hit the hand of Martin McNeil. Paul Evans stepped up to score from the spot and grant the Bees a controversial equaliser after United had led from the third minute, and at the full-time whistle the U's players surrounded Knight and continued their protests. Feelings ran particularly high as earlier in the half, at the other end, United were denied a penalty for an identical-looking incident when John Hansen's cross struck Brentford's Carl Hutchings. |
