| Monday 6th March 2000 : Roy to make referee request |
|
In the wake of another controversial refereeing decision on Saturday, Roy McFarland will ask the Football Association to change the allocated referees from two matches in the season's vital run-in period. The officials in question will come as no surprise to Cambridge United supporters when they learn that they are Kevin Lynch and John Brandwood. Lynch was in charge at Chesterfield in August when he awarded two penalties against United in a 4-2 defeat, then reported McFarland and players Scott Eustace and Neil Mustoe for remarks made to him as he stood in the area outside the dressing rooms as they trooped off the pitch at full-time. His report led to fines and suspensions for all three. Brandwood was in charge of the FA Cup fifth round tie against Bolton at the Abbey and failed to send off Mike Whitlow for rugby-tackling the goal-bound Trevor Benjamin. McFarland explained to the Cambridge Evening News, "We've heard that Mr Lynch and Mr Brandwood are due to take charge of our games again, and in view of what happened when we had them last, it is in everybody's best interests that they be switched. "Lynch's handling of the game at Chesterfield still rankles, and everybody knows the effect Brandwood had on our FA Cup match against Bolton. We are going to do all we can to try to get them replaced at our games by other officials." |
