Friday 3rd March 2000 : Brentford match team news and preview

Few Cambridge United fans need reminding of the recent history between these two clubs and the last three meetings have not been without their talking points. There seems to be little love lost between Brentford owner Ron Noades and Roy McFarland either, as evidenced by McFarland's comments in yesterday's 'On The Spot' interview for U's Net, when he commented:

"Mr Noades said early season that he felt we were a little bit like Wimbledon, which surprised me to say the least. Many of the comments from Mr Noades surprise me. I know that Mr Noades wanted to sign one of my players earlier in the season, and he had the temerity to tell me what he thought he was worth. We will wait to see what Trevor Benjamin is worth in the long run, and lets hope on Saturday Trevor can score a hat-trick to let him know how much he is worth. It is a big game for us, and it will have an edge to it, as I hope every game for the rest of the season will do."

With doubts over hamstring victims Jason Kavanagh and Marc Joseph, McFarland may be forced into a defensive reshuffle that could mean returns for Ben Chenery, Ian Ashbee or Martin McNeil, and there is also a slight doubt over Tom Youngs.

McFarland reminded the Cambridge Evening News of our final game of last season when he said, "Seeing them win the Division Three title on our ground when we'd outplayed them was a bitter experience, and we won't forget that after the 2-2 draw earlier this season Mr Noades claimed we'd been playing 'a bit like Wimbledon'.

"If anything it was Brentford who resorted to the direct tactics, and we can look back to the away match last season where we played some of our best football of that campaign, but they won it with a long shot that caught us out. You could say we owe them something. It would be great to extend our winning away run to three tomorrow."

The manager also revealed that he made the team watch the video of the Millwall match this week and the experience lifted them. "We had another home disappointment last weekend, but we all watched the video of the Millwall game and I think it gave the players a lift.

"We matched one of the top teams, but threw it away in one bad 15-minute spell. We failed to close them down, something we have to concentrate on tomorrow because Brentford have players who could hurt us if we allow them too much space."

The Bees are currently aiming for the play-offs and doing best of the four sides promoted from Division Three last season, and will be boosted by the return from injury of striker Scott Partridge. He will partner £500,000-rated Steve Jones who is on loan from Bristol City.
