Thursday 29th June 2000 : Notts appointment ends Mac rumours

The appointment of a new manager at Notts County will end Midlands speculation that Roy McFarland was in the frame for the job.

Former Dundee manager Jocky Scott was appointed yesterday, putting an end to stories that McFarland was on his way to take over at the Magpies. Apparently rumours that the club had picked an experienced manager but were waiting for him to return from his holiday led to speculation that McFarland - who was away on holiday at the time - was the man in question.

Reg SmartChairman Reg Smart spoke to the Cambridge Evening News and stressed that no one had made an official approach to recruit McFarland. Speaking before the Scott appointment was announced, he said, "I've head nothing about it from Notts County. No-one has approached me for permission to talk to our manager, who is under contract. If there has been any attempt to make contact with Roy, that would be out of order.

"In any case, Roy assured me only yesterday he had not applied for any other job. I've always said if a Cambridge United manager wanted to make a move we wouldn't stand in his way, but things have to be done properly."
