  Monday 31st January 2000 : Trevor's Brentford link and director's response

Brentford's Teamtalk service could barely wait to report today that Trevor Benjamin will be joining Ron Noades' side now that our FA Cup run is at an end. They claim that "Brentford sources" tell them that "they are about to seal the £750,000 signing of U's 22-year-old striker Trevor Benjamin. A fee has apparently been agreed between the two clubs and the transfer could go through on Tuesday when Benjamin visits Griffin Park. Wigan are also believed to be planning a late raid."

Judging by the accuracy of the reporting - Benjamin will be 21 next month - and their previous stories that Trevor would be signing for Brentford within a day or two, Cambridge United fans would be better served by reading the words of a Cambridge United "source" on this site. Director Gary Harwood wrote the following on the message board on this site in response to messages about the Teamtalk story:

Trevor Benjamin - photo by Andrea Thrussell"Trevor is an integral part of Roy's team. He is also on a long contract with the Club. It is impossible to say 'under no circumstances' as everything in this world has a price. At the moment I can not (in my wildest dreams) imagine any club in the country offering us a price that would be so good we would be unable to refuse before transfer deadline day. In other words he will not be going anywhere. As I said in my earlier message, Butts is in a very very very different situation and I will expand on this more when there is something definite to say. That may be later today or tomorrow.

"We are all 'worried about the situation' as far as our league position is concerned. As many people have said, if we can continue to play the way we have in the last few games we still have a chance of staying in this division. It would be great to keep our best players longer but most of our fans do understand why we can't always do that.

"The Board also has to ensure the long term survival of the Club in the best way it possibly can. It's not always easy being a football club Director and sometimes difficult and unpopular decisions have to made. If we were able to generate another £400,000 to £500,000 a year from matches or a redeveloped stadium less of the unpopular decisions would have to be made and perhaps such unpopular decisions could become a thing of the past."
