| Sunday 30th January 2000 : Report claims Reading deal on |
|
A Press Association report today, widely carried on news services including Teletext and various football web sites, states: "CAMBRIDGE have agreed to sell Martin Butler to Second Division relegation rivals Reading for £800,000. The two clubs confirmed details of the move last week but the 25-year-old striker's move was put on hold while Cambridge remained in the FA Cup. They were knocked out by Bolton yesterday." It has been rumoured for at least a fortnight that an unnamed club had agreed a fee for Butler and big-spenders Reading were the favourites, but it seems clear that this story has emerged from Reading FC and not Cambridge United. U's manager Roy McFarland would not comment on the rumours yesterday evening and the club have not issued a statement. |
