Thursday 27th January 2000 : Local MP eventually backs U's

In what can only be seen as an extremely welcome move, local MP Anne Campbell has publicly backed Cambridge United's proposal to redevelop the Abbey Stadium and has urged the City Council to approve the plans.

In an open letter she states today that it is in the interests of many people that Cambridge United is successful and a modern ground is essential for the club's survival. This is a particularly pleasing statement as only last week she stated in the Cambridge Evening News that:

"It is understandable that the city council planning committee is taking some time to reach a decision even if that is inconvenient for the club. They must understand it is a hugely complex matter. The club have to be patient and make sure that the right decision is reached."

The text of the letter, which has also addressed directly to supporters in response to their letters, reproduced below:

I am disappointed that the City Council Planning Sub-Committee has decided to defer the planning application by Cambridge United Football Club to redevelop their ground.

I understand the difficulties of displacing some allotment holders but alternative facilities are on offer.

Having been involved in earlier discussions with the Club on relocation, I understand very well the problems that involves. I do not believe that there are realistic alternatives to the plans that have been put forward.

It is in the interests of the local community, the city as a whole and all of those who follow and support the club that Cambridge United is successful and it is essential to the survival of the club that it has a modern ground. Although redevelopment of the current site has needed careful consideration, I am sure that it is something from which many people in Cambridge and beyond would derive much benefit and pleasure.

It is not my usual practice to intervene in planning decisions but this is one that is vital for the future of football in this city. I have written to all the Councillors sitting on the City Council Planning Sub-Committee asking them to agree to the plans when Cambridge United's planning application is next discussed, in order the development can go ahead with the minimum of delay.

Yours sincerely,

ANNE CAMPBELL

Member of Parliament for Cambridge

This public support comes as a big boost for the club ahead of Saturday's big match and the 'yellow card' protest, which has caught the attention of the media and already received a lot of attention.
