Thursday 27th January 2000 : Martin Butler rumours

It is rumoured that Martin Butler might be doubtful for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Bolton Wanderers after suffering a leg injury in training. The player was walking soundly yesterday and at this stage before a big match there is no telling whether the team news from either side is reliable so the best Cambridge United fans can do is hope that this is a smokescreen.

He knows the importance of Saturday's match to the club and himself, and he's determined to do well. High-profile matches like these are a showcase for players, as the Worthington Cup match last season proved for Trevor Benjamin."

There should be plenty of publicity about the game as several media events take place this afternoon, and the FA Cup itself will be present at a photo call at the training ground and a media call at the ground. The usual U's Net Q&A with Roy McFarland has been postponed due to the sheer numbers in attendance, with national newspaper, TV and radio reporters rubbing shoulders with the usual local media.

In the wake of conversations at Monday's AGM there are also rumours that a fee may already have been agreed for Butler with at least one unnamed club although, according to Teamtalk, Preston manager David Moyes has denied that he has bid for the in-demand striker.

The list of clubs linked with the 25-year-old grows longer and reports in a Norwich newspaper this week suggested the Canaries - who recently sold Darren Eadie for £3m - were eyeing Butler. Nottingham Forest can probably be crossed off the list as they look set to sign Martin Smith from Sheffield United and Jack Lester from Grimsby Town, but other clubs who continue to be mentioned in the same breath as our top scorer include Gillingham, Reading and of course Brentford.
