| Monday 24th January 2000 : Match reactions: "A vital win" |
|
Roy McFarland says his players will be training with smiles on their faces this week after Saturday's win against Chesterfield. A brace from Trevor Benjamin secured the win that lifted United off the foot of Division Two and McFarland said afterwards, "I made it clear the League match was more important to this club than the Cup tie, but now we've cleared the decks for next Saturday. We got a vital win, which we deserved, to give everybody -- players and supporters a boost -- and we'll be training with smiles on our faces this week." Now all eyes can switch to the fifth round tie against first division Bolton Wanderers, but the Lancashire side must first concentrate on the second leg of their Worthington Cup semi-final against Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night. "Bolton will know they are in a match on Saturday, and we know this is a game we can get through to reach the quarter-finals," McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News. "The last week was a tough one for us with illness and injury affecting so many players, but we stood up to the test and the pressure against Chesterfield. "We showed a lot of character and we played a lot of good football. Our strikers, Martin Butler and Trevor Benjamin, have been developing well as a front two in a 4-4-2 in recent weeks, and they were a real handful against Chesterfield, as they will be against Bolton." Excluding the AWS tie against Barnet, when a virtual reserve side took to the pitch, United have conceded just three goals in the six games since Christmas and looked notably more confident after scoring the second on Saturday. The worry is that we have only scored four times in those games, three from Benjamin and one from Butler, and both players continue to be watched closely by other clubs. Benjamin knows he could have had a hat-trick on Saturday when he failed to make the most of chances on the hour and after 77 minutes, and told the CEN, "I know I could have got a hat-trick. I was only inches away after scoring the second. But the first was the most important just before half time. I think we knew we'd win it after that. Now I'm sure we can get out of trouble." |
