Sunday 23rd January 2000 : Chesterfield match reactions

All the talk in today's press is of "Clever Trevor" Benjamin and the brace of goals yesterday afternoon that nudged his value higher. It was an absolutely vital win for Cambridge United which lifted us off the foot of the table and allows us to start eyeing the group of teams directly above, taking note of games in hand and goal difference and starting to dare to think again about staying up.

Roy McFarland commented in today's Sport First: "This was a pressure game for us, much bigger than next week's FA Cup tie against Bolton, and we stood up to be counted.

"I knew our front two would give Chesterfield all sorts of problems and that's the way it worked out. It was a pretty even game for much of the first half, but we ran the second and deserved the win. Now we must use this as a springboard to get out of the relegation zone."

Spireites winger Ryan Williams, who gave stand-in left back Ian Ashbee a tough game, said, "What was disappointing was that we probably had the edge in the first half and made some good chances."

Meanwhile, weekend transfer speculation sees Brentford striker Lloyd Owusu linked with Bradford City, and if there is any truth in the story it could see Ron Noades return with an improved big for Martin Butler, a player he admires and has bid for on several occasions.
