| Friday 21st January 2000 : Overwhelming support from CEN phone poll |
|
A telephone poll held by the Cambridge Evening News shows an overwhelming majority of voters are in favour of the proposed Abbey Stadium development. The lines were open all day yesterday with one number to call to record a vote for "YES CUFC should be allowed to redevelop NOW" and another to vote "NO CUFC should NOT be allowed to redevelop NOW", and this afternoon Graham Eales passed on the result which showed 88% voted 'yes' and just 12% 'no'. He added that there were over 1,000 'yes' votes. Meanwhile U's Net contributor Graham Nurse had an excellent letter printed in the News this week and he gave permission for it to be reproduced here: Sir, It was with anger that I heard of latest council decision concerning the redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium. Your report included the astonishing claim by Councillor Durrant that he was "fully supportive" of Cambridge United. Last Saturday I listened with mounting incredulity to another Councillor on Radio Cambridgeshire trying to defend the indefensible, and being appalled at the apparent lack of knowledge and understanding she displayed. She was finally forced to admit that just seven allotments of those in question were actually in use. Every argument and every option has been examined ad nauseum, as demonstrated by the Planning Officials barely disguised exasperation. In the Eighties and Nineties this country stagnated under the dead hand of political dogma. It may have been eased nationally, but locally it appears to have tighten its stranglehold. I do not want this city run by people whose words say one thing and whose actions say the opposite, or those whose judgement is so impaired that they put the interests of seven allotment holders over the interests of thousands of football fans, or by narrow-visioned procrastinators pursuing their own political agendas. Throughout the country new multi-purpose football grounds are being built, actively encouraged by Councils with civic pride and foresight. Unfortunately we have Councillors who plainly will use any delaying tactic in their attempts to do just the opposite. The Cambridge Evening News ought now to print the full list of Councillors, their political parties , their wards and how they voted in this latest debacle so that the thousands of football players and fans in this city will know who not to vote for in May. Enough is enough. Graham Nurse, Cambridge |
