Friday 14th January 2000 : Supporters Association speaks out

The Cambridge United Supporters Association has spoken out on the decision by the City Council's Planning Committee to delay their ruling on the redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium.

CUSA Secretary Nigel Pearce commented, "Cambridge United fans cannot believe this disgraceful delay. The Council had all the information they needed to take a decision on Wednesday. If they wanted clarifications why were these not requested months ago?"

Pearce echoed the incredulity of most U's supporters when he added, "Just what has Cambridge United done to deserve such shoddy treatment? I can't imagine a planning application from Microsoft would be delayed and delayed on such petty technicalities. Quite how this city thrives in the face of bureaucracy like this is beyond me. The Club have spent the last 15 years exploring alternative options. There are no alternative options - save for CUFC going out of business. It is scandalous for the council to suggest the pitch could be shortened!

"So many people stand to benefit from the re-development - the local community, the Club and its fans, and the city itself. Cambridge is the high tech capital of the UK and should not be home to a third rate professional football stadium."

He concluded, "The CUSA urge the City Council to demonstrate their support for Cambridge United FC by approving the planning application at their next meeting in February."
