Monday 21st February 2000 : More match reactions

Roy McFarland was very disappointed with the team's performance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Blackpool and he accused his players of complacency.

In today's Cambridge Evening News he commented, "It looked as though we felt we just had to turn up to beat Blackpool, something I warned everybody about. We were very negative in the first 45 minutes in which our standard of play was unacceptable. To some extent it looked as though we'd left our legs at Notts County, but that's not an excuse. We shouldn't be losing at home against other relegation contenders."

The defeat effectively wiped out the benefit of Tuesday's night's excellent win at Notts County and leaves United firmly rooted in the bottom two with just sixteen vital games left.

"Our major problem was that we defended poorly. Our back four and goalkeeper all had off days, and we panicked under pressure. Then, when we regrouped in the second half and created chances to get something out of the match, irrespective of whether we deserved it, we weren't sharp enough in their box.

"It was very disappointing after the Notts County result, and we'll be talking about it, and watching the video before tomorrow night's match at Bury. Blackpool have made changes and were a much better team than we played away. They got behind us and gave us problems. They did things we should have been doing."

Clive Wilson - picture Andrea ThrussellWith matches coming thick and fast now, McFarland faces another problem ahead of Tuesday's trip to Bury after Clive Wilson limped off ten minutes from the end with knee ligament trouble. Although it is not known how serious the injury is, it is very unlikely he will recover in time which leaves the manager to ponder another reshuffle and possibly asking Ian Ashbee to deputise again.

38-year-old Wilson (right) also spoke after the match and underlined the poor first half performance: "We were glad to see half time," he said, "we just weren't playing at a high enough tempo. It was as though we were the away team."

Meanwhile victorious Blackpool boss Steve McMahon hinted that comments made by McFarland in November had helped to motivate his side for the relegation six pointer.

"I don't know how Mr McFarland will be feeling," he commented after the match, "considering we were the worst team he'd ever seen when we beat Cambridge at our place. I don't think he'll be saying that now.

"We looked very sharp and hungry, and I was a bit disappointed we didn't go in at half time two or three goals up. That's three away wins on the trot which is brilliant, but we have to start doing it at home if we are going to get out of that bottom four."
