| Thursday 17th February 2000 : Abbey makes scoring debut |
|
Zema Abbey played for the reserves at Fulham yesterday afternoon and scored on his debut in a 2-0 win. The other goal was scored by Marc Joseph which was his first goal at any level for Cambridge United. The line-up included goalkeeper Jimmy Glass who recently joined the U's on monthly terms, John Hansen's Danish teammate Jorgen Kristensen at left-back, and at Dutch centre-half David Kasterlein who has been playing in Finland. Spurs striker Paul McVeigh played his second trial game in attack. Reserve team manager John Taylor played in central midfield and was pleased with impressive performances from Kristensen and Kasterlein, who will stay for another week to allow the coaches to take a closer look at them. The opener came from a corner which was headed across goal and after a good initial block from the goalkeeper Marc Joseph was on hand to poach the goal. The second was scored by Abbey who Taylor described as "a constant threat at the far post and a good prospect". In today's CEN Roy McFarland commented about Abbey: "He did very well again and he was playing on the right-hand side of midfield, which is not his natural position." United also had the luxury of a missed Nathan Lamey penalty in the 89th minute. Cambridge
