Tuesday 15th February 2000 : Notts County preview and early team news

Jason Kavanagh could feature in tonight's match at Notts County after recovering from a hamstring strain, but Neil Mustoe is rated 50/50 after slightly aggravating his thigh strain. Roy McFarland may make changes to the side beaten 1-0 by Stoke City on Saturday but he is highly unlikely to risk the busy midfielder if the rest of the squad is fit.

Defender Marc Joseph returns from suspension and striker Zema Abbey has been allocated squad number 22 and was tipped to travel with the squad today, although the new signing from non-league Hitchin Town is thought unlikely to feature so soon. There is speculation that there may be changes up front with Tom Youngs a possible partner for Trevor Benjamin in attack, instead of Steve Guinan.

Roy McFarland revealed in today's Cambridge Evening News that he had a 45 minute meeting with the players before training yesterday when they discussed recent games and events, and he was lifted by what he heard:

"The discussion was interesting, because usually when you have meetings with the players you tell them certain things, but I thought it was important they said what they think as well. We talked about what's been going on for the past few months and it was an excellent heart-to-heart. What was very pleasing was the positive vibes, and then they gave me a real lift when they went out on the training pitch."

Tonight's performance against in-form Notts County will be important ahead of Saturday's visit of Blackpool in a relegation battle 'six pointer', and McFarland stressed, "It's mental toughness that's required now because we're fighting for our Division Two status.

"I was feeling for them - not feeling sorry for them - because the way they've been playing, we don't deserve to be bottom," he told the CEN. "It is a fact, but I think it is an unjust position, and I said they've just got to keep performing like they are, because the results will eventually change."

Notts County beat Wrexham on Saturday to get back into the play-off chase and manager Gary Brazil, who had a very brief spell at United under Tommy Taylor with a record of one game and one goal, will be looking for another win to keep their good form going.
