Monday 14th February 2000 : Youth team promoted and aiming for the title

United's youth team have clinched promotion despite defeat at Luton on Saturday morning, but they will have to wait until next Saturday to try to clinch the title.

Their run of seven games without loss was ended by the 1-0 defeat on Saturday after a Graham Rush own goal, but they only need a point from their game against Oxford to finish top of the South Central Conference of the Football League Youth Alliance.

Youth team manager Dale Brooks told the Cambridge Evening News: "The Luton game was a non-event and conditions ruined the occasion. The pitch was very heavy and it would never have been played at Cambridge. A draw would have been a fair result, but unfortunately Graham Rush put through his own net. However, a point against Oxford will be enough for the title."

The game at the Simoco ground kicks off at noon on Saturday and the youngsters would welcome plenty of support from supporters on their way to the game at the Abbey in the afternoon.
