  Thursday 10th February 2000 : Reserves report

Michael Kyd boosted his chances of a return to the first team picture by scoring four times for the reserves against Leyton Orient yesterday.

Cambridge United's Clubcall reporter Joe Crane was at the match and thought that Kyddie looked "brilliant" running at players while the off-the-ball movement of Daniel Chillingworth, who signed his first pro contract this week, was excellent but his finishing less so. Ben Chenery played at centre-half where he had mixed fortunes and player-coach John Taylor played in the centre of midfield and bossed the game.

Two of the other goals came from Paul McVeigh, on a week's trial from Tottenham Hotspur and as reported yesterday a Northern Ireland international, and youth team striker Nathan Lamey scored the other.

In tonight's Cambridge Evening News, Taylor commented that Kyd's display was "exceptional" and added, "He has to have a very good chance of getting back into the first team squad at Stoke on Saturday. He's trained well this week, and although Orient were pretty poor, Kiddie took his goals well. I wouldn't expect him to get straight into the starting line up, but he's probably earned himself a place on the bench."

Alex Inglethorpe opened the scoring for Orient but after that United, in Taylor's words, "blitzed them for an hour. It was very, very good football."

The trialists described as Norwegians yesterday are in fact Danes and midfielder John Hansen caught the eye, earning himself an extended trial. Taylor explained, "The Danish lad played well on the left side of midfield, and will be kept on for an extended trial, while the other Dane (Jurgen Kristensen) at full-back will probably return after going back home for a while."

Taylor thought that McVeigh did well, but added, "He's only a little fella, and we have to assess whether he can handle the physical side in our division. We'll be taking another look at him."

Orient scored twice late in the game through former French international striker Amara Simba but Taylor commented, "That was after the gaffer took me off, and I was orchestrating everything in midfield!"
