| Friday 4th February 2000 : Wanless baby doing well |
|
For those supporters who missed the good news earlier this week in the Cambridge Evening News, Paul Wanless' new daughter Emily is making good progress after being born 10 weeks prematurely on the day of the Chesterfield match nearly two weeks ago. She is recovering from a brain haemorrhage in the special care unit at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and 26-year-old club skipper Wanless said on Tuesday, "It's going very well, we are very pleased." His wife Catherine said, "Emily has been promoted to the nursery. She's on full feed, her jaundice has gone and we are hoping she'll be able to take a bottle soon and put on some weight. She's had another brain scan and the doctors are very optimistic there won't be any lasting damage." Despite the worries over baby Emily, Wanny has produced two towering performances in the last two games against Chesterfield and Bolton and from the news it seems his newest daughter has inherited his battling spirit. Manager Roy McFarland paid his own tribute when speaking to U's Net reporter Will Jones for yesterday's 'On The Spot' interview. Referring to Wanless' performance against Bolton, McFarland said, "He was outstanding. The problems Paul Wanless has had regarding his baby and his family made his performance even better. Perhaps it was a release for him, considering the problems he had during the week. "I have talked about Paul Wanless several times, and he doesn't change. I say it to him: he perhaps isn't one of the most gifted players I have been involved with, but he is without doubt one of the most committed. He is committed to the football club, and committed to the team." McFarland also spoke about the Bolton game and Martin Butler's sale to Reading, before answering some searching questions from supporters in the interview, which can be read here. |
