Wednesday 29th December 1999 : Official response to Marvin accusations

Cambridge United today responded to accusations that mascot Marvin the Moose was offensive to Cardiff supporters during yesterday's 0-0 draw.

Marvin the MooseMarvin (pictured left) was withdrawn during the half-time interval after his 'playful' gestures were apparently misinterpreted by the visiting fans, just minutes after their side had been reduced to ten men.

Club Secretary Andrew Pincher commented, "Club mascots communicate and gain responses from the crowd in the form of hand movements and gestures, and it was unfortunate that on this occasion these were misconstrued.

"The timing of Cardiff's first dismissal was crucial in that this was so close to half-time and passions were still running high amongst their supporters. A senior Police Officer, who was in the vicinity, recognised the potential flash point and immediately relayed his views to the control room at the ground. Marvin was subsequently removed from the pitch and was spoken to as to his conduct and his responsibilities when representing the club.

"The Club would like to sincerely apologise to the Cardiff supporters for any offence caused and thank them for their reasonable reaction to the situation."

Allegations that Marvin used an inflatable toy to incite the visiting support were refuted, both by Club staff and the local Police who were working in the visitors' area of the ground.
