  Thursday 23rd December 1999 : U's accused again

Cambridge United have been accused of "moving the goalposts" again by a club bidding for one of our strikers.

Trevor BenjaminGillingham's Teamtalk service claims the Gills had a £650,000 bid accepted by United, with the move to take place on FA Cup third round weekend two weeks ago but, according to Gills manager Peter Taylor, United then decided that Benjamin was still required until after the fourth round.

In an unattributed quote, Taylor says, "We made what I consider to be a very high offer of £650,000 for Benjamin which Cambridge accepted. We were looking to have the player the day after our cup tie at Walsall, then Cambridge moved the goalposts and said they wanted to keep him until after the next round."

Brentford owner Ron Noades recently made an identical comment about "moving the goalposts" after failed negotiations for the transfer of Martin Butler.
