| Tuesday 14th December 1999 : Barnet match called off |

Tonight's Auto Windscreens Shield match against Barnet has been called off due to the water-logged pitch at the Abbey Stadium. A local referee inspected the pitch at noon and, although he had the option to defer a decision until 5pm, conditions were bad enough that he could make an immediate decision. The match will be rearranged as soon as possible and assistant club secretary Mark Johnson says the club are working towards next Tuesday evening (21st) subject to Barnet's agreement. Manager Roy McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News, "The reason why it was called off, is that more than anything else it would have been very dangerous and would probably not have been a fair test of football. "The pitch is sodden with water and I think it would probably have been ripped to shreds if we had tried to play on it tonight. If we had started, it's also quite likely we would have had to call it off halfway through. The worry was obviously potential danger to players, but it would have been nice to have played the game and try to keep up the momentum from Friday's FA Cup win," he added. |
