Thursday 9th December 1999 : Fans Forum reactions

Just over 100 fans attended the Fans Forum at the club on Tuesday night, when they were able to pose questions to club staff including Roy McFarland, chairman Reg Smart and several players.

The reaction from many fans was that it was interesting and the answers they received proved how open the club were prepared to be, while United's PR manager Graham Eales and Roy McFarland have both commented that it was an enjoyable and valuable evening that went very well. The evening was organised by the CUSA and chairman Brian Attmore said, "It was a great turnout both from the fans and the Club."

As was reported in the Cambridge Evening News, one of the most interesting comments in view of the current speculation surrounding strikers Martin Butler and Trevor Benjamin came from the chairman. Asked if any money McFarland would be given any money to spend if a player is sold, he pledged, "I will support Roy to the figure of 50% of any transfer fee. That is as much as I can do."

Director Roger Hunt revealed that the club were trying to make contact with Bill Gates, chief of the software giants Microsoft, in an attempt to attract investment in the club - but underlined that the club were doing their best to attract interest from local businesses too. General Manager Colin Davies added that the planned redevelopment of the stadium would be a big aid to gaining corporate investment, but that it could be two or three seasons before the work was completed if planning approval is granted.

The next stage in the redevelopment process is a meeting with the City Council on 12th January 2000 to discuss first stage planning approval.
