Monday 6th December 1999 : Wanless plays down controversy

Paul WanlessU's skipper Paul Wanless has played down two of the controversial incidents in Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth.

Neil Mustoe's 61st minute free kick caught on the wind and appeared to have crossed the line before being caught by 'keeper Mark Ovendale, but quoted in today's Sun Wanless said, "The players nearest the ball didn't think the free-kick had crossed the line before the keeper grabbed it."

Then five minutes later Trevor Benjamin went down in the penalty area in a similar incident to one which saw Bournemouth awarded a first half penalty, but Wanny commented, "Trevor may have made too much of the challenge." Benjamin was booked for diving while the Abbey howled for a penalty to be awarded.
