Friday 31st July 1998 : Trialists earn permanent deals ...

Roy McFarland has moved to add trialists Alex Russell and Arjan Van Heusden permanently to his squad, just a week ahead of the new season. Both have agreed two year deals with Cambridge United and although the Russell move was widely anticipated the swoop for giant Dutchman Van Heusden came as more of a surprise.

The 25-year-old 6ft 4ins goalkeeper joins on a free transfer from Port Vale, where he spent four years after joining from Dutch side Noordwijk. Nicknamed "Iceman" by Vale fans because of his cool, calm demeanour, Van Heusden became surplus to requirements after the recent arrival of Kevin Pilkington from Manchester United. He had an impressive loan spell with Oxford United last season where he won several "man of the match" awards, and Millwall wanted him as their second choice keeper, but the Dutchman has opted for first team football with Cambridge United instead.

Van Heusden's signature almost certainly marks the end of Scott Barrett's career with Cambridge United. 35-year-old Barrett refused to sign a new deal last summer and was poised to join Leyton Orient until the London side baulked at paying a fee. Barrett eventually returned to United and agreed a new two year contract, but it seems United will not stand in his way if he finds another club now.

"We don't have the resources to carry two experienced goalkeepers,"McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News, "so Arjan will be first choice, backed up by young Shaun Marshall.

"Scott has done very well for the club, but Arjan is ten years younger and in our view has some better qualities as a keeper."

Like Van Heusden, Russell is 25 and he joins on a free transfer from Division Three rivals Rochdale. He is a creative, goal-scoring midfielder and has already won many fans with his pre-season displays. The CEN reports that Russell may miss tomorrow's friendly against Watford because of slight hamstring trouble.

Former U's skipper Micah Hyde will return for the first time since he left United last summer to play a major part in the Hornets' Division Two championship campaign. The game has taken on a new significance since United were paired with Graham Taylor's side in the Worthington League Cup, with the first leg to be played at the Abbey a week on Tuesday.

McFarland commented, "Drawing Watford in the League Cup puts a different picture on the friendly. We need to get ourselves prepared for the first League match at Torquay a week on Saturday, but we have to be aware of not showing Watford everything we have."

In yesterday's Hackney Gazette Tommy Taylor indicated that Orient are in no hurry to end 'Billy' Beall's spell in football limbo, saying, "We are going to do something but we are in no rush. They want to get rid of him because if they don't they'll have to keep paying his wages even though he won't play for them. He could be there forever!"

Taylor added, "I'd like to have him here for the start of the season but even if I do he won't be fit because he hasn't been doing any pre-season training."

United's reserves came from behind to beat Histon Town last night. Laurence Martin put the local side ahead but an own goal levelled the scores by half-time, then a late rally saw United go on to win 3-1. Midfielder Tommy Smith scored from the penalty spot and big striker Mark McCammon added the third.

Wednesday 29th July 1998 : Russell to stay?

Midfielder Alex Russell, who has quickly won many fans with his pre-season displays for Cambridge United, could be on the verge of a permanent move.

Alex Russell
Alex Russell
After another busy display last night, when Russell saw a powerful shot well-saved by England Under-21 goalkeeper Richard Wright, manager Roy McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News: "Nothing has been signed yet but we are very pleased with what he has done here. I would like to sign him and I am in the process of trying to sort something out."

Russell is out of contract at Rochdale and in addition to their offer of fresh terms and United's interest, his local Conference side Southport are reportedly keen to sign him.

Other trialists Louie Donowa and Tommy Wright will get further chances to impress in the reserve friendly at Histon tomorrow night (7.30pm) and against Watford on Saturday at the Abbey Stadium (noon kickoff).

McFarland has taken both good and bad points from last night's defeat by first division Ipswich Town. He admitted, "I was disappointed with our football. We should have increased the tempo, but we let them dictate the game and play at their own pace.

"Our strengths are that we are a fit, young, powerful side and we should work on that to impose ourselves on our opponents. Overall we dealt with Ipswich well when they had the ball, but we got sucked into trying to play just a little bit too much football."

On the plus side he commented, "Ipswich are a very good team and I was pleased at the way we worked hard and never stopped running. It's got to be a good work-out for us against one of the top six sides in that division, and we matched them for long periods of the game.

"It was just a bit disappointing we didn't do more when we had the ball," he told the CEN. "We are capable of playing better than that."

Tuesday 28th July 1998 : U's fail to bridge gap in class ...

Cambridge United0-2Ipswich Town
Matt Holland 8'
Mark Venus 68'
Att: 2,648

Cambridge United: Barrett, Chenery, Ashbee (Preece 69'), Duncan, Joseph, Campbell (McAvoy 6', Campbell 16'), Wanless, Benjamin (Taylor 76'), Butler (Wright 60', McCammon 89'), Kyd (Donowa 55'), Russell (Youngs 78').

Ipswich Town: Wright, Stockwell (Sonner 20'), Taricco, Clapham (Dunker 67'), Mowbray, Venus, Dyer (Bowers 78'), Holland, Johnson, Holster (Friars 73'), Petta.

Referee: Keith Hill (Royston)

United made just one change to the eleven who started against Northampton, with Michael Kyd recovering from a twisted knee to replace trialist Louie Donowa.

The game got off to an even start in front of a bumper crowd, but took a turn for the worse from United's point of view after just six minutes. Jamie Campbell wrapped his arms around David Johnson and determinedly dragged the speedy England B international to the ground as he was breaking away clear on goal. United fans breathed a sigh of relief when it became clear that referee Mr Hill was not going to send him off and make the game even more meaningless, signalling instead for an immediate substitution. New pro Larry McAvoy stripped off and jogged on to replace Campbell, no doubt expecting an extended opportunity to impress.

But the game took another bad turn within a minute as a cross into the box from Dyer caught United's defence flat-footed, tackles were missed and midfielder Matt Holland nipped in to fire a rising shot into the roof of the net.

Town striker David Johnson was causing United all sorts of problems with his pace, although Trevor Benjamin was also keeping England Under-21 keeper Richard Wright on his toes at the other end by chasing loose balls and generally "putting himself about". Johnson saw a shot cleared off the line by Marc Joseph on the quarter hour, and then referee Hill showed he had taken on board a conversation with United's rugby league-loving secretary Steve Greenall.

Exactly ten minutes after McAvoy replaced Campbell, the referee signalled the bench for the change to be reversed, a novel piece of refereeing reminiscent of the rugby league "sin bin" rule which allowed a subdued Campbell to re-enter the fray. As it took place in front of Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks, the head of the Football League, it will be interesting to see if the idea is widely discussed or adopted. If it is, you know where you saw it first!

Ipswich had to make an early change of their own when Danny Sonner replaced the injured Mick Stockwell after 19 minutes, then within seconds trialist Alex Russell, a busy, skillful midfielder who is already becoming a favourite with the crowd, shook Ipswich with a powerful shot from the edge of the box that was well-saved by Wright. Trevor Benjamin had a great chance to level the scores after 35 minutes when a cross-shot into the box was parried by Wright only as far as Benjamin, but the teenager's powerful effort was blocked at point-blank range by the impressive 'keeper.

Throughout the game there was some attractive, thoughtful football on show and United's young side can take some cheer that for long periods of this game they matched their highly-rated opponents. But while Ipswich had the pace and directness of Johnson and Petta up front, United seemed to be lacking the thrust of a similar player. Too often the likes of Butler and Benjamin were coming deep looking for the ball, and Kyd was replaced ten minutes into the second half, presumably still recovering from his knee problem. Scott Barrett had one of his best recent games for United tonight and kept the scoreline respectable with several excellent stops.

As the second half progressed Petta and Johnson started to get the ball down more and run at United's defence, but in the 57th minute the disgraced Campbell deserved his applause for a perfectly timed tackle on the edge of the box when he dispossessed Petta after the Dutchman's surging run. The moment seemed to brighten up the crowd and United's players, and for a while there was more urgency to the game.

On the hour Martin Butler was replaced by new trialist Tommy Wright, one of the Leicester scorers on the fateful day that United's rise through the divisions was halted in 1993. He was unable to inject any potency to United's attack and Ipswich doubled their lead after 68 minutes from the penalty spot.

Another dangerous run from Petta saw him set up Johnson in the box, and after jinking past two United defenders the striker was tripped by Ben Chenery. Mark Venus stepped up to convert the penalty kick.

The next ten minutes saw the familiar string of substitutions headed by David Preece, who replaced Ashbee within a minute of the penalty, then John Taylor who came on to another warm welcome when he replaced Benjamin, and Tom Youngs came on for Russell. The changes predictably disrupted United enough for Ipswich to enjoy another period of late pressure but United defended stoutly enough. A badly-timed tackle from David Preece saw Keiron Dyer stretchered off in the 79th minute and the only late event worthy of mention was the "sin-binning" of Tommy Wright, replaced for the last minute by Mark McCammon.

So in a game that flickered but never really burst into life both managers will have seen positive things to take from the evening, and United can be cheered by the way they matched one of the top sides in Division One for long spells.

Monday 27th July 1998 : Roy keeps trialists guessing ...

Trialists Louie Donowa and Alex Russell both had good games against Northampton on Saturday but Roy McFarland is refusing to give any clues about whether he will be offering them contracts.

Alex Russell
Alex Russell
Russell, who scored a goal and set up two more at Cambridge City last week, was full of ideas and running on Saturday, whilst Donowa was sometimes isolated on the right wing but caught the eye with his strong, direct runs when he got the ball. The experienced winger earned the penalty for the first goal.

McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News: "They both played very well and certainly give us another option. Louie looked stronger than he has done throughout the time he has been with us and I was pleased with his fitness for 70 minutes. He will have another chance to show what he can do against Ipswich on Tuesday night.

"Alex Russell was, if anything, even more impressive. He has fitted in well and looks very much part of the team."

But the manager says he has not yet reached a decision about the pair, explaining, "It is still up in the air. I will continue to monitor the situation, but nothing has been decided yet."

Saturday 25th July 1998 : Butler brace sinks weak Cobblers ...

Cambridge United2-1Northampton Town
Butler 40' (pen), 45'Simpson 66'
Att: 916

Cambridge United: Barrett (Van Heusden 46'), Ben Chenery (McAvoy 76'), Ashbee (Smith 72'), Duncan, Joseph, Campbell, Wanless, Benjamin (McCammon 69'), Butler (Taylor 79'), Russell, Donowa (Youngs 69').

Northampton Town: Woodman, Simpson (Witter 28'), Spedding, Sampson, Hill, Howarth, Warner, Wilson (Lee 67'), Freestone, Heggs, Peer.

United's starting eleven had a more familiar look this afternoon. Ben Chenery made his seasonal reappearance after recovering from a knee injury, meaning there were just two changes to the team that finished last season. Trialists Alex Russell and Louie Donowa came in for want-away 'Billy' Beall and the injured Michael Kyd.

Before the game kicked-off there was an immaculately-observed silence in memory of long time United supporter and behind-the-scenes helper Gladys Owen, who sadly passed away on Tuesday.

Second division Northampton fielded a relatively weak side as they had entertained Chelsea on Friday night and, despite a sleepy start in the sunshine from both teams, United comfortably dominated the first half. Alex Russell showed glimpses of why he earned rave reviews last week at Milton Road with some neat passing, willing running and a smart turn to hit the post after about 20 minutes. Meanwhile Martin Butler and Louie Donowa both looked lively on the break, bringing the ball forward at pace.

Northampton lost Ian Sampson with a badly sprained ankle on 28 minutes in a bad-tempered few minutes that saw Trevor Benjamin booked for use of the elbow, although a blatant push on the big striker was ignored by the referee moments later.

Finally United's attacking moves and pressure paid off in the 40th minute when winger Donowa burst into the box at the Allotments End and was tripped. The penalty was duly awarded and there was an amusing moment as Butler and Paul Wanless both raced behind the goal to retrieve the ball. It was Martin Butler who won the honour, placed the ball and coolly slotted home the opener, and it was Butler again five minutes later when Jamie Campbell's header into the box caused some confusion. Butler claimed the final touch after several heads rose in the box.

Roy McFarland watched the game from the directors' box and must have been pleased that his defence looked sound and Scott Barrett had barely been called upon. He sent Dutch trialist Arjan van Heusden on in place of Barrett for the second half, the first of many changes as the game progressed.

Trevor Benjamin and Louie Donowa both went close in a good spell after the break, while Van Heusden was out smartly to save well from Heggs. But the towering goalkeeper blotted his copybook in the 66th minute when the Cobblers pulled back a soft goal. A mix-up between the trialist goalkeeper - who earned rave reviews during a loan spell at Oxford United last season - and Jamie Campbell allowed Karl Simpson to score the softest of goals, and left United's rear guard looking at each other in embarrassment.

United's substitutions started three minutes later as player-coaches John Taylor and David Preece sent teenage forwards Tom Youngs and Mark McCammon on for Donowa and Benjamin. Three minutes after that, in the 72nd minute, former Manchester United midfielder Tommy Smith replaced Ian Ashbee and then Larry McAvoy came on for Chenery and the changes began to affect the pattern of the game. The final change was met with warm applause as John Taylor trotted on for the last ten minutes in place of Butler.

Tom Youngs showed some promising moments and was unlucky to see his shot hit the bar, while new pro Larry McAvoy looked calm and capable in defence. The game wound down to a quiet end, with both sides apparently happy to settle for the 2-1 scoreline.

After the game I spoke briefly with the injured Michael Kyd - who has a twisted knee but says he will be fit for the start of the season - and Roy McFarland. He seemed satisfied with today's showing but added, "Tuesday should be more of a test. Ipswich are a good side, and on Saturday Watford could bring us down to earth."

 Thursday 23rd July 1998 : United round-up ...

United's first team squad have just enjoyed two days of training and golf at Five Lakes, near Colchester, ahead of Saturday's home friendly against second division Northampton Town (3pm). Admission for that game, as well as Tuesday's against Ipswich (7.45pm) and next Saturday's against Watford (12noon) is £5 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Don't forget that a concession book priced at £5 will be required to qualify for the lower priced admissions next season.

In yesterday's Hackney Gazette Tommy Taylor revealed he is hopeful of signing 'Billy' Beall before the start of the season. Never one to mince his words, the former United boss stated, "Cambridge are desperate to do a deal now. But something will happen, perhaps in the next couple of weeks."

O's chairman Barry Hearn said recently that players would have to be sold before any were signed, and out of favour Orient striker Jason Harris looks set for a £25,000 move to Bury, possibly paving the way for a fresh approach for long-term target Beall.

The youth team beat Norwich City 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon, with Jonathan Mills netting the deciding goal.

Updates to this page may be less frequent for the next week. Sorry about this, but I'm trying to fit a few days holiday around some football matches! :-)

 Wednesday 22nd July 1998 : McFarland on trialists ...

Roy McFarland is of the opinion that last night's draw at Kettering was another important boost to the fitness levels of his squad, but may also have given him some pointers about the players.

"This was more than a useful exercise," he told the Cambridge Evening News. "It opened my eyes to what we have got, and perhaps, what we still need. I want to look at certain players but it's not always easy for them to come in cold like that and perform like that without knowing the team's pattern."

Tuesday 21st July 1998 : Strong United side to face Poppies ...

Kettering Town1-1Cambridge United
Hudson 14'Ashbee 83'
Att: 743

Cambridge United: Arjan Van Heusden (Barrett 63'), Joe Keith (McAvoy 69'), Ashbee, Joseph, Duncan, Campbell, Russell (Preece 63'), Donowa (Kyd 55'), Butler, Benjamin, Mustoe (Wanless 55').

Kettering Town: included Vowden, Hayes.

There were two surprises in the United line-up to face Kettering tonight, with Dutch goalkeeper Arjan Van Heusden on trial from Port Vale and young fullback Joe Keith on trial from West Ham. Alex Russell, who starred against Cambridge City on Friday, continued in midfield and ex-Norwich and Peterborough winger Louie Donowa replaced Michael Kyd in the starting line-up.

United started brightly and could have scored from perhaps the best move of the game after eight minutes. Martin Butler took a delightful through ball from Russell but cut it back behind Trevor Benjamin. United went behind to a highly dubious goal on the quarter-hour from Lee Hudson, who looked to be miles offside before rounding the advancing van Heusden. Kettering continued to play well and enjoyed the balance of play until another flurry from United late in the half.

After the break - when Kettering made nine changes! - United started to get to grips with a physical game and Martin Butler and Trevor Benjamin both forced good saves from the Kettering keeper. The introduction of Paul Wanless and then David Preece into midfield certainly helped and midway through the half Wanless could have levelled the scores but put his header wide. Michael Kyd looked lively and made some good runs down the right, and tested the keeper with a shot from outside the area, then Ian Ashbee made no mistake when he met Butler's pinpoint cross from the left on 83 minutes. United finished the stronger of the two sides and if there was going to be a winner it would have been the visitors, but most of the scoring chances were long-range shots.

Of the trialists, Louie Donowa was disappointing, Russell looked promising and Roy McFarland will probably want a longer look at Keith and van Heusden to decide whether they are better than players already on the books.

Cambridge United take a strong squad to Rockingham Road tonight to face Conference side Kettering Town. Roy McFarland intends to take the opportunity for a good look at Louie Donowa as the winger came on at half time at Cambridge City on Friday night, just as most of United's first team were taken off. Midfielder Alex Russell, who set up two goals and scored one himself in the first half of that game, will also play tonight.

Ben Chenery will miss out again as a precaution because of his twisted knee, but Paul Wanless may well take part after missing Friday's game with a sore foot. New club captain Wanless started last night's reserve friendly at Soham.

The club received some sad news this morning about one of the "behind the scenes" stalwarts. Gladys Owen, who with her husband Charlie was responsible for looking after the mascots on matchdays, died this morning after suffering a heart attack on Saturday. Gladys took sweets to the office staff before matches and was a lottery ticket seller for many years.

Secretary Steve Greenall commented, "She will be badly missed."

Monday 20th July 1998 : "Good workout" at Soham ...

Soham Town Rangers2-2Cambridge United XI
Docking 40', 52'McCammon 60'
Cockrill 89'

Cambridge United starting XI: Marshall, Odi, McAvoy, trialist (Gavin someone?), Scales, Smith, Wanless, Youngs, McCammon, Ingham, Armstrong.

Roy McFarland declared himself pleased with the workout provided by Soham Town Rangers in tonight's friendly. A Cambridge United XI were trailing 2-0 to strikes either side of the break and the young U's were struggling to cope with the superior physical strength of the non-league side.
Darren Cockrill
Darren Cockrill

Several substitutions were made as McFarland took a good look at his new professionals and trialists, but the introduction of veteran player-coaches David Preece and John Taylor saw some better football being played and swung the balance back United's way. Firstly lanky striker Mark McCammon reduced the deficit on the hour then, in an exciting end to the game, first half sub Darren Cockrill scored the equaliser in the last minute.

"It was a very good workout," commented McFarland. "Soham played very well."

Although he was at pains to point out that these games are most important for fitness and getting the players ready for August the 8th, the manager singled one player out for praise after he made a slow start: "Darren Cockrill looked strong," he said, "and I'm very pleased with him."

McFarland added, "We went two-nil down and came back, scored two good goals. That will be a confidence booster for the boys and they will look forward to training much more tomorrow than if they had lost."

The first team squad are back in action tomorrow night at Conference side Kettering Town, where they could face former teammates Colin Vowden and Adie Hayes.

 Saturday 18th July 1998 : Match reactions ...

Following yesterday's 6-1 derby victory over Cambridge City at Milton Road, Roy McFarland has warned "Let's not get carried away!"

He told the Cambridge Evening News: "It was a good work out as we knew it would be a competitive game. I took the first team off at half-time as I had seen enough. We couldn't better that and I was really pleased with our performance but from experience I know you can never get carried away. It's just a start for us, our first game in public, as it is for City.

"I was pleased with the trialists, and thought that Alex Russell, in particular, did well. But we go to Kettering on Tuesday -- that game will be an upgrade for us, both physically and team wise -- but I will be looking to introduce our trial players more."

United have been back in training for a fortnight while City have had just three training sessions, so it was no surprise that United's first team raced to a 4-0 lead by half-time. City manager Graham Daniels admitted as much to the CEN:

"The whole point was that we wanted United to bring their first team squad, to get a good crowd to reward Keith and Steve's fine service to this club -- the game fulfilled those functions," he said. "It would have been nice to have a closer scoreline, but United did look good -- all credit to them. But it gave us the chance to have a look at some youngsters, and I was pleased with them."

United continue the build-up to the new season with a "mix and match" reserve friendly at Soham Town Rangers on Monday evening, followed by the first team's outing at Kettering on Tuesday. [Fixture list]

 Friday 17th July 1998 : United trounce local rivals ... news round-up ...

Cambridge City1-6Cambridge United
Taylor 70'Benjamin 2'
Russell 15'
Butler 20, 30'
Scales 67'
Youngs 74'
Att: tba

Cambridge United: Barrett (Wells 45'), McAvoy, Ashbee (Scales 45'), Duncan (Odi 45'), Joseph (Armstrong 45'), Campbell (Taylor 45'), Russell (Webb 45'), Kyd (Youngs 45'), Butler (Cockrill 45'), Benjamin (McCammon 45'), Mustoe (Donowa 45').

Cambridge City (subs not recorded): Kelly, Harris, Hercock, Gawthrop, Saddington, Carter, Adams, Lockhart, Norfolk, Pope, Cogger.

United got off to the perfect start to the pre-season campaign, recording a very satisfactory 6-1 win over local rivals Cambridge City. As expected in this sort of exercise there were wholesale changes to the team at half time, by which time the U's were leading 4-0.
Alex Russell
Alex Russell

The impressive first half performance was dictated by trialist Alex Russell in midfield who crossed the ball to set up Trevor Benjamin's second minute opener. Russell then created the room for himself to deservedly score the second on 15, and Martin Butler added a well-taken brace on 20 and 30 minutes, the second from a Russell through ball.

Roy McFarland made no less than ten changes at half time, which no doubt involved the exchanging of sweaty kit as today's delivery of the new strip only yielded sixteen sets! The only player to survive the changes was first year pro Larry McAvoy who was deputising at right back for the injured Ben Chenery.

On came trialists David Wells, Guy Odi and Louie Donowa, plus first year pros Jamie Scales, Dean Armstrong, Darren Webb and Darren Cockrill. Player-coach John Taylor and young forwards Tom Youngs and Mark McCammon - who played games for City last season - made up the replacements.

Unsurprisingly the game took on a more even tone for a while until left-back Jamie Scales made a good solo run to put United back on track with a fifth goal in the 67th minute. City substitute Mark Taylor slotted one past trialist 'keeper David Wells three minutes later, but Tom Youngs provided the icing on the cake for United with a fine individual effort sixteen minutes from time.

This was an impressive performance by United and a great result but the real winners tonight were Keith Lockhart and Steve Gawthrop, whose testimonial game this was.

Cambridge United play their first pre-season friendly tonight at neighbours Cambridge City, and Roy McFarland will give all of his trialists a chance to stake their claim for a transfer. Goalkeeper David Wells, French defender Guy Odi, midfielder Alex Russell and veteran winger Louie Donowa will all take the field at some stage tonight in the testimonial for Cambridge City pair Keith Lockhart and Steve Gawthrop. The only doubt ahead of the game is defender Ben Chenery, who twisted a knee in training.

Roy McFarland
Roy McFarland
Manager Roy McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News: "We will have a full strength first team squad, of about 16 or 18, and the trialists will all appear at some stage. The lads have worked really hard in training," he added, "so this gives us the chance to fine-tune things against good opposition the games with City always have an edge.

"It also gives us the opportunity to help the lads with their testimonial, but it's a game we want to win and it will get the ball rolling once again. We had a good final three months last season, and that is the type of football we want to get to by the opening game."

United's youth team won their first pre-season friendly last night, beating Newmarket Town 6-3. The goals came from the highly-regarded Andy Ingham - who netted a hat trick - Daniel Chillingworth, Michael Barrows and Mark Gibson.

The Premier Cambridge United Golf Day took place yesterday at Bar Hill, and the team entered by Cambridge company LSAS were victorious. LSAS is run by John Parsons and Bob Wickham, a member of the VP club, and their team included United players John Taylor and Paul Wanless.

Striker Michael Kyd told the Cambridge Evening News: "Paul Wanless is a bit of a golf shark, but Roy McFarland's probably the best player."

He added, "We've got a very enthusiastic young squad -- with a bit of luck, I see no reason why we can't go up."

Fellow striker Trevor Benjamin was playing his first round of golf, and he echoed Kyd's optimism: "I'm feeling sharp - much sharper than at the end of last season. I can't wait to start banging in some more goals."

Despite the plethora of press reports suggesting that Leyton Orient are set to make a new offer for Billy Beall - thought to be in the region of £30,000 - secretary Steve Greenall confirmed today that there has been no contact whatsoever about Beall.

Thursday 16th July 1998 : Orient to renew Beall interest?

According to reports in yesterday's Daily Mail and Hackney Gazette, Leyton Orient manager Tommy Taylor is to make another move to sign 'Billy' Beall. The Mail points out that former United boss Taylor originally offered £5,000 plus £5,000 linked to appearances for the out of contract midfielder, but Cambridge manager Roy McFarland labelled the bid as 'ludicrous'.

'Billy' Beall
'Billy' Beall
The Hackney Gazette suggests the new offer could be in the region of £30,000, but that could still fall some way short of what United would be looking for. On Orient's Clubcall line, chairman Barry Hearn said a deal for Beall was still possible if Cambridge reduced the fee while Taylor said he was still hopeful of signing the 20-year-old.

Meanwhile yesterday's Cambridge Evening News also reported that the O's would be making a fresh bid, after speaking directly with Taylor. He stated that Beall, who has failed to return for pre-season training with United, is not training with Orient either, and added, "We are still hoping to sign him if we can come to a reasonable agreement with Cambridge."

United manager Roy McFarland countered, "We would welcome a new offer from Orient. They said they were going to make one several weeks ago, but nothing happened."

McFarland has already strengthened his midfield by signing former Manchester United reserve Neil Mustoe from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer, and out of contract Rochdale midfielder Alex Russell is on trial. Both could make their United debuts at Milton Road tomorrow night in the testimonial game for Cambridge City pair Keith Lockhart, who started his career at the Abbey, and long-serving club captain Steve Gawthrop. Another former Manchester United midfielder, Tommy Smith, is training with the squad and has signed non-contract terms.

Ticket prices for the home pre-season friendlies against Northampton Town, Ipswich Town and Watford are £5 for adults and £1 for concessions. Secretary Steve Greenall wishes to remind supporters that once the season is under way OAPs, students and under-16s will only be able to buy tickets at a concessionary price if they have a concession book. The books are priced at £5.00 for the season and a voucher will be torn off at the turnstile, rather as with a season ticket. The decision to do this was taken after various checks revealed that some people were abusing the system.

 Tuesday 14th July 1998 : Youth team fixtures ...

Fixtures for the youth team have been confirmed, including some attractive pre-season friendlies. The South East Counties League programme gets under way on Saturday August 8th at Brighton, but before that the trainees will face good quality opposition from the likes of Norwich City, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, culminating in a visit from West Ham on the evening of Friday 31st July. [Youth Team Fixture List]

There has been no further contact with Leyton Orient over out-of-contract midfielder 'Billy' Beall, and United are awaiting a response to their letter of last week. Orient chairman Barry Hearn, recently elected to the Football League board as the sole representative of Division Three, has vowed to try to have conditional tribunals reinstated.

 Friday 10th July 1998 : Trialists named ...

Four trialists who are training with Cambridge United have been named. One is goal-scoring Rochdale midfielder Alex Russell who is currently out of contract. The 25-year-old, a target for Roy McFarland last year, was offered terms by the Lancashire club but is understood to be looking for a new club after losing his first team place. Russell would be available on a Bosman free transfer.

The other players are David Wells - a 20-year-old goalkeeper who has played mainly reserve team football with Bournemouth - Louie Donowa - the 33-year-old former Norwich, Birmingham and Peterborough winger - and French defender Guy Odi.

Roy McFarland told the Cambridge Evening News: "We'll be having a look at these and a few others over the next week or so. Alex Russell was certainly a player who interested us not so long ago."

Leyton Orient have returned early from their tour of Uganda, which could see negotiations over a fee for 'Billy' Beall re-open earlier than expected.

 Thursday 2nd July 1998 : Midfielder signs ... Cup draw ...

Cambridge United have completed the signing of former Manchester United midfielder Neil Mustoe. The 21-year-old passed his medical today and signed a two year contract this afternoon.

Mustoe originally had trials with the U's in January at the same time as Old Trafford teammates Andrew Duncan and Grant Brebner, but whilst Brebner - who recently signed for Reading - and Duncan started loan spells at the Abbey, Mustoe joined second division Wigan Athletic on a free transfer. Andrew Duncan's loan move was made permanent but after six months at Springfield Park and just one appearance as substitute, Mustoe was released last month.

Gloucester-born Mustoe was part of Manchester United's 1995 FA Youth Cup winning side and last season he scored three goals in thirteen appearances for their 'A' team.

United's latest recruit said today, "Initially I came here last season when Andy Duncan and Grant Brebner came on loan. I liked the set-up, but the club couldn't take three loans at the same time [clubs are limited to a maximum of two on-loan players at any one time]. And anyway, at that time I still wasn't certain about leaving the North West.

"The chance to go to Wigan Athletic came up but things didn't work out quite as I had hoped. I heard that Cambridge were still interested in me and with Andy and Tommy being down there I thought that it would be a great chance to 'kick start' my career."

With midfielder Tommy Smith having signed fresh non-contract terms yesterday while he tries to earn a full contract, it is like a Manchester United reunion. Smith and Mustoe are sharing a room at the club's Brookfields hostel, and previously in Manchester Mustoe shared digs with defender Andy Duncan. Tommy Smith came for trials with the reserves last season after recovering from a long-term injury, and he signed a short-term contract in March before making his League debut from the bench in the final game at Hull.

Mustoe added, "We were all at Manchester United for four years or thereabouts and it helps having a few familiar faces around. It's a new start for me and like the rest of the lads we are raring to get into pre-season training and then for the season to start."

The 21-year-old travelled to East Anglia on Tuesday with his parents and agreed a deal with manager Roy McFarland, and today he signed a two year contract after having a medical.

The first team squad reported back for pre-season training today and after collecting their new training kit they went running on the Royston hills. Cambridge United have used this venue for many years.

Not among them however was 'Billy' Beall although the midfielder was told when to return for training. "We haven't contacted Billy yet," said secretary Steve Greenall this afternoon, "but we need to establish the position soon."

The draw for the first round of the League Cup has been made at last and Cambridge United are paired with first division Watford. United entertain the Hornets at the Abbey on Tuesday 11th August and travel to Watford for the second leg on Tuesday 18th August. Both games will kick off at 7.45pm. The pre-season friendly at the Abbey on August 1st (noon kick-off) will provide both managers with the chance to run the rule over their forthcoming cup opponents! [Updated fixture list]

As well as the cup draw, the Football League announced new sponsors in Bass Breweries who already sponsor the Carling Premiership. Coca-Cola's six year association has ended and the Cup will now be called the Worthington Cup. Bass have agreed a five year deal worth a record-breaking £23 million to the League.

Interestingly, Cambridge United received the news of their opponents from PC Trevor George as the information was not forthcoming from the League, and United broke the news to Watford who were similarly in the dark! U's Net was able to supply the full draw to the club offices this morning and even by this afternoon the draw had not been received from the League!
